SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,140, dated August 25, 1885.

Be it known that l. REUBEN F. \VILCOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to tlie accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part'of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line so a, Fig. 1.. Fig. 8 is a modification. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one of the securing-loops.

This invention has relation to fences; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fenceposts, which are set in post-holes in the usual manner, but at longer intervals than is practiced in the erection of the ordinary picket-fences.

l; designates the upper wire, which takes the place of the upper raii, and (J designates the lower wire, which takes the place of the lower rail ordinarily used in constructing picket or paling fences. These wires are socured to the posts by staples, and are stretched sufficiently taut to prevent sagging. D designates the fence pales or pickets, which may be of any suitable material.

E designates the securing-loops by which the fence-pales are secured to the fence-wires. These loops consist of pieces of wire having (N0 model.)

end loops, F, which are formed around the upper and lower fence wires, and after the fence pale is introduced into said loops a twist, H, is made between its ends on the outside of the pale or picket, which causes the loop to bind upon the pale or picket and draw it to and hold it against the fence-wire. The loops can be moved along the fence wires, so that the pickets can be adjusted to the desired intervals.

The pickets may also be arranged in the form of lattice-work, if desired.

The twist or eye H may be tightened at any time, should it become loose, to hold the picket; or it may be loosened at any time, should it be desirable, to remove a picket or pickets for any purpose.

A fence thus constructed is cheap, and can be erected without the employment of skilled labor, and is not likely to be broken; but if broken at any time, may be easily and cheaply repaired. The pickets maybe placed on either or both sides of thc fence-wires.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The improved fence described, consisting, essentially, of the posts A, theupper and lower feneewircs, B (l, the pickets l), and the loops E, for securing the pickets to the said wires, havii'lg eyes at opposite ends and an integral intermediate tighteningloop, H, all combined and adapted for joint operation, substantially as specified.
