IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,521, dated January 18, 1876 application filed September 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARGHIBALD TAYLOR, of Keezletown, in the county of Rockingham and State ofVirginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Braces for Fence- Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my fence-posts, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cross-bar.

My invention relates to the construction of that class of fences commonly called postand-rail fences; and consists in the employment of bars arranged upon the posts in a diagonal manner, as hereinafter specified, to form rests for the rails, and at the same time to serve as efficient braces to keep the posts in position.

A A of the drawings represent two posts or stakes, pointed at their bottoms, so as to be readily driven into the ground. The tops of these posts are rounded and have shoulders b, as shown, to provide for receiving and holding the perforated cross-bar B, in the usual manner. The letters 0 O represent crossbar-s attached to the posts at right angles therewith, and the letters D D represent my braces. The braces D D are respectively attached to the posts upon an angle therewith of about forty-five degrees, as shown,

but in reverse order, as represented-as, for example, if the lower bracebe attached at its lowest point to the right-hand post, and its highest point to the left-hand post, the next brace in order upward will have its lowest point connected with the left-hand post, and thus in regular succession are the braces reversed in position from the bottoms of the posts to the tops thereof,-or until a sufficient number be attached for holding the rails required.

It will readily be seen that when these braces D are thus united with the upright posts or stakes, the latter will be held in position with great firmness, and at'the same time the rails are provided withan inclined or wedge-shaped rest, in which they will brace each other.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The two pointed stakes A A, adapted to be driven into the ground and held at top by a yoke, B, horizontal and inclined cross-ties O D, for strengthening and supporting the ends of the rails, and the duplex post A A thus formed having its broad side at right angles to the line of. the fence, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
