FARM-FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 616,734, dated December 27, 1898. Application filed Mmh 24,1898. Serial No. 675,055. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARKES DELEY FAYETT RUssELL and WILLIAM THEOFOLES FENTRESS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ellis Mills, in the county of Honston and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Fences; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view showing a section of our improved fence in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the manner in which adjacent panels are connected to each other. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 00 at of Fig. 2.
The object of the invention is to provide a portable fence of improved character which can be readily constructed and set up and taken down; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which we have shown two panels of our improved fence, the letters D D designate the longitudinal rails of the panels, and f the palings or pickets which are secured to said rails.
We have shown one of the panels as having pickets or palings throughout its length, while the other one has palings at its end portions only, being constructed mainly of longitudinally-extending rails in connection with the rails D D. Said panels may, however, be of any suitable construction in general.
The rails D of both panels are extended beyond the panels proper, and secured to such extensions are single pickets or palings f, which are separated from the first pickets or palings of the panels proper by distances about twice as great as the ordinary distances between pickets. In practice these extensions are formed by simply omitting one picket at each end portion of the panel.
Secured to adjacent pickets f f of the panel 1 above the upper rail D is a short transverse piece 0, and connecting the simi* lar pickets of the panel 2 below or adjacent to the lower rail D and upon the opposite side of the fence from the piece 0 is a similar piece 0.
In setting up the fence the upper portion of the picket f of the panel 2 is inserted between the upper rail D and the transverse piece 0 of the panel 1, while the lower portion of the picket f of the adjacent section or panel 1 is inserted between the lower rail D and the piece 0 of the panel 2. The extensions of the rails D of the panel 1 extend sufficiently by the panel 2 to brace against the same. In this manner a secure and rigid interlocking connection is formed between the panels.
In order to hold the connected panels in upright position, crossed stakes d are driven through between pickets f and f at suitable 4 intervals and are suitably tied, as indicated.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a portable farm-fence, the combina-- tion with a panel having the extended longi= tudinal rails, the separated end pickets or palings, f, f, and the transverse piece secured to said pickets or palings adjacent to one of the longitudinal rails, of an adjacent panel having similar extended longitudinal rails and separated end pickets or palings, and a similar transverse piece, butlocated upon the opposite side of the fence, and adjacent to the opposite edge of the panel, each of said panels having its end picket or paling f engaged between the transverse piece and adjacent rail of the other panel, substantially as specified.
2. In a portable farm-fence, the combination with a panel having the extended longitudinal rails, the separated end pickets or palings f, f, and the transverse piece secured to said pickets or palings adjacent to one of the longitudinal rails, of an adjacent panel having similar extended longitudinal rails and separated end pickets or palings, and a similar transverse piece, but located upon ets or palings f, f, secured to said rails, and the transverse piece secured to said end pickets or palings adjacent to one of the said rails and upon the opposite side from the 15 said rail, substantially as specified.
