* IMPROVEMENT INTFENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,709, dated July 3, 1877 application filed December 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ATHEL A. McALLIs- TER, of Shady Grove, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective View of my fence, and Fig. 2'is a front elevation thereof.
This invention relates to portable fences;
and it consists in the construction andarrangement hereinafter and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a fence panel or section, which is composed of horizontal rails A and three upright bars or particularly set forth cured to said rails. Battens A and A are arranged at or near one end of said fence-section, but on opposite sides thereof, with a small space between them, and batten A is located in the middle of said section, all of said battens being vertical. At the other end of said section A the ends a of said rails A' are free.
B designates an adjoining section of the same fence, provided in like manner with rails B and vertical battens B B B The middle batten, B, is on the side of the fence opposite to that on which batten A is located. The said sections are joined by putting the free ends b of section B through the space between battens A A at the end of section A. r In like manner the free ends a of the latter section are rigidly seare passed into the section next in. order, and so on until the fence is complete. By straightening the line of the said fence as far as possible, the sections thereof are made to brace each other, so as to render other fastenings unnecessary. Inthis way a zigzag fence is constructed, as shown in Fig. l.
The said sections A and B, when joined as described, may be folded inward for transportation, and their mere unfolding leaves them in proper position for fencing. 'By reversing one of said sections, so as to bring middle battens A and B on the same side of the fence, and end battens A B on opposite sides thereof, a straight fence will be produced. This arrangement is shown in Fig.2. In it the ends b enter between the battens A A without deflection. This straight fencing would be impossible if the said battens A and A were on the same side of panel A.
The arrangement (in the zigzag fencing first above described) of the middle battens A B on opposite sides of the fence equalizes the distribution of their strengthening effect.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable fence-section having two vertical battens, A A arranged as shown, horizontal rails A a central vertical batten, A, and free ends a a, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence I of two witnesses.
ATHEL A. MGALLISTER.
