IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,770, dated January 25, 1876; application filed November 27, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER (J. PLUMMER, of Forest City, in the county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my fence, and Figs. 2, 3, 4:, and 5 are detail views thereof.

This invention has relation to improvements in portable fences; and it consists in certain arrangement and novel construction of the fence-panels, whereby they are readily connected, and may be as readily detached, as will .be hereinafter more fully explained and claimed. V

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates one, and the letter B a second, panel of my improved fence. These panels are composed of longitudinal boards a a, nailed or otherwise suitably secured to uprights.

As shown in Fig. 4;, the central boards a extend a certain distance beyond the end upright b, and are united together at their ends by means of a strip of wood, 0, a second strip, 0, being applied upon the other side of the said extension, for a purpose hereinafter explained.

At the other end of this panel longitudinal rails a are attached to an intermediate upright, at, the upper and lower rails being extended beyond rails a, and rigidly secured to an end upright, l, whereby a space, 6, is formed between uprights d and l, of sufficient size to receive the united rails a above described.

As shown in Fig. 3, upright 01 is provided with a slot, f, of sufficient size to receive strip 0.

The panels of my improved fence are 0011- nected together in the following manner, to wit: The extension formed by rails a and strips 0 c is passed through space 6 between uprights d l, and strip 0 is introduced, when the panels are straightened out in slot f in upright d. In this position the second strip 0 will engage with upright l on the end of panel B, and in this way the panels of the fence will be prevented from endwise displacement, the said panels being effectually locked together.

In order to prevent the straight fence, formed as above described, from tilting over, I employ a brace, D, of triangular form. This brace consists of two side rails, g, united. at top by a strip, h, and near its lower edgeby a brace, h, and it is provided at its apex with a notch, t. Brace h is also provided with a notch, 1', upon its under edge.

The triangular brace D is passed through space 0, and its upper notch t'engaged with the upper rail to of the panel, and the notch t" in brace h engaged over its lowest rail 00, thus securing the said triangular support to the panel, as shown in Fig. 1.

The panels will be secured together as above described, thus not only uniting the same, but also guarding them against casual overthrow.

In practice, my improved fence may be read ily taken apart by first turning one panel at an angle to the other, and then disengaging the one from the other by the means above described reversed.
