Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,989, dated March 1B, 18T 3.

To all whom it may concern: l

Beit known that I, JOSEPH EDWIN GAR- LINGTON, of Chambers Court-House, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the construction and Operation of the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation oi' a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top ViewY of same. Fig. 3 is an end view of same. Fig. 4 is a top view of the base-plank.

This invention has relation to portable fences; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts composing the posts and bracket, whereby these parts, wh en v made oflight and cheap material, which is best suited for such fences, will possess the requisite stability.

In the accompanying drawing, the letters A`A indicate the panels of the fence, consisting of light stringers and pickets. To the ends of the stringers and abutting' against them are secured the upright boards C, by nailing thin strips or battens B to said stringers and uprights, thus forming hollow posts of light and strong character, open toward the panels. D designates the base-plank of the bracket, recessed on each side of its middle portion to receive the feet of the adjacent posts of the panel above described. Near its ends the base-plank is mortised at a to receive the corners of the lower ends of the two diagonal braces E, which cross each other between the boards C near the top of the fence, and are secured together and to the uprights C by means of a long pin, D', passing through both boards and both braces. This pin Dshonld be stout.

In the abovedescribed construction the bracket, although formed of three light strips, is sufficiently strong. The oblique braces E are rmly secured to the pin D and stepped in the base-plank, which is prevented from being pushed endwise by the connection of the center notches b with the feet of the posts. The brackets being thus rmly braced, the posts, also, by their connection with said brackets, are maintained in upright position.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-A The portable fence, constructed as above described, consisting of the panels having upright end posts C, the mortised and centrallynotched base-plank D, and the oblique braces E, stepped inthe mortises of the base-plank,

and pinned'to the end posts C with battens B, which are stepped in the notches of the base-plank, as specified.
