IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,950, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification describin g a new an d Im proved Portable Fence, invented by ANDREW A. GAR- VER, ot' Albion, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa.
This invention consists mainly in arranging the cross-slats ot' the panel diagonal to the rails of the same to admit of a better connection ot' the panel with the double brace than in other portable fences.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation ot a fence constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section looking to the left from the' line a: .fr of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View of one ot' the panels, detached. Fig. 4. is a view ot' the double brace, detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This fence consists of panels A, composed of railsor slats B, connected together' by upright slats U placed in an inclined position, as seen in the drawing, so that the upper rail will project six inches, more or less. `The lower ends of these pieces O project down below the lower rail, as seen at D. 1n the lower edge of the lower rail is a notch, E, just inside of the uprights O. Thesenotches and the arran gementoi the pieces C allow the upper and the lower rails of the panelto engage with the brace of the fence, as seen in the drawing. F represents a double brace by which the fence is supported, consisting of twoslats, G G, connected together by the horizontal piece H, and by a pin or rivet at the point I, Where they intersect or cross each other. J is a square slot or recess in the brace F, which is just wide enough to admit the projecting ends K ofthe upper rail otl two panels, as seen in Fig. 2. When the panels are thusconnected with the upper ends ot' the double brace the notches E ot' the lower rails engage with the notch l. in the horizontal piece H. By this arrangement it will be seen that the intersecting pivot I ot' the double brace comes between the two upper rails ofthe panels, while the bars or slats Ur G extend out on each side, as seen in the cross-section, Fig. 2. The ends ot' the second rails are rounded and beveled oi', as represented, sothat they wedge in and bear against the slats ofthe double brace when the panels are put together, and thereby help to support and keep lthe fence rigid.
The essential feature ot' my invention is the position ot' the slats O with regard to the rails ot'the panel. This allows the panels to engage with the double brace in a most secure and substantial manner. The panels are readily detached from the brace by raising up one or bot-h. The fence lnay be taken down or pnt up in the most expeditious manner.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut- Thecombination oi' rails aB, slats C, notch E, and recess J ot' brace F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ANDREW A. GARVER.
