P. TOMAN. v
PORTABLE FENCE. I
' No. 274,532. Patented Mar.27,1883.

PHILIP TOMAN, 0F BROOKVILLE, OHIO.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,532, dated March 2'7, 1883.
Application filed December 4, 1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP TOMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portable fences in which the ends of the lower overlapping boards rest within a notch of a. transverse sill, the board of one panel being secured by an angular iron pin in said notch. Theupperoverlapping boards are attached bya bolt, and one of the posts of each panel is attached to the sill by a brace. The objects are to secure the panels in a simple and inexpensive manner, adapting the same to a vertical or inclined position and to unevenness of the ground. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of two panels of the ble. The upper and lower boards of each panel overlap, the former being united by a bolt passing through orifices in the ends. This prevents the panels being separated by a longitudinal movement. The latter rest in anotoh of the sill D, and an orifice of the rear board embraces the angular pin E, which is driven into the sill. Thus the panels 7 are securely fastened together. The brace C at its top is bolted to the post and at the bottom to the sill. The sill has a series of holes in the rear end for the bolt of the brace, and by this adjustment the panels may he set in a vertical position or diagonal, with a. view to preventing 0 an overturn by the winds. The forward end of the sill is bolted to the post. The lower front board being free to move within the notch of the sill, the panels readily adjust themselves to the varying surface of the ground.
I am aware that in theconstrnction of portable fences notched sills and braces connecting the same to the posts have been used prior to my invention, and I only claim the combination of the several parts,as herein specifically 6c set forth.
-Having fully" described my invention, what I regard as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a transverse sill, notched 6 for the reception of the bottom boards of the panels, and provided with an angular pin projecting over the notch, with a brace, and-with panels locked in the notch by passing the angular pin through a hole in the bottom board of the rear panel, placing the bottom board of the other panel in front of it within the notch, and securing the panels in place by a boltjoining the overlapping ends of the top boards.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHI LIP TOMAN.
