Description

@duidt l %itu5 am etat OSKERF. A. FAULKNER OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 111,831, dated February 14, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENcEs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and lmaking part of the same I, Osman F. A. FaUnKNnR, of 'Mount Pleasant., Henry county, Iowa, have invented cert-ain Improvements iu-Fences, of which the following is the speci-` fication.
i Nature and Objects of the I Mention..
animals.
Figure 2'is a perspective of a single trestle ready to be used in a fence.-
Genewtl Description.
A is the main trestle-ra'il, supportedvon the legs a a, which are insert-ed through two-inch holes bored through the rail at a distance of four to six inches apart'along the length of the rail, the legs projecting a foot or more above the rail to retain the free end of the next trestlc-rail, and to form a lock with the long stakes b b, which are driven into the ground iu such position as to rest on the free end of the trestlerail, as shown by the drawing, and be held betweer the projecting ends of the trest-lc-legs, thus making a strong fence, capable of resisting force from the winds or from cattle in a lateral direction, and also secure against the,l tendency to yield in the direction of its length, being supported by the locking of the stakes in the space between the tops of the legs.
lhis fence is very easily constructed out of the 0rdinary materials on the farm, requiring but a small amount of timber, and is readily put up 'around any patch of grain or pasturage, to keep cattle out or in.
Should it be desirable to contert it into a permai nent close fence, it can be done by the addition of rails or boards below the trestle-ralsas shown in fig. 1, at B.
The studs D D may be set into the ground or rest upon it, or be suspended above it, at the pleasure of the builder.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described trestle-fence, composed of panels, the horizontal bars A of which are supported at one end upon trcstle-legs 'aV a permanently secured thereto, and at the other end upon the adjacent panel,
and diagonal stakes b b, and riders G, whereby the panels arebraccd and locked together, substantially as set forth OSKEB. F. A. FAULKNER.
