J. LEEVER.
v FENCE POST.
No. 442,290. Patented Dec. 9.- 1890.
Witnassezs: Inuantor- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB LEEVER, OF BANGOR, MICHIGAN.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,290, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed May 12, 1890. Serial No. 351,581. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB LEEvER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, county of Van Buren, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of posts the base of which or that portion which is i11- serted in the ground is made of metal.
The object of the invention consists in the following described and claimed improvements, designed to cheapen the post and add to its utility.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 3 3 in Fig. 1, looking from a point at the right.
Referrin to the lettered parts of the drawings, the base A converges on all four sides from the point where it attaches to the wood part B of the post toward the lower end. By this means it is easily driven into the ground. This base is made hollow, and is provided with a series of perforations a through the sides into said hollow interior. By this means less material is employed in the requisite or given size post, and the dirt enters through these perforations 0 into the hollow interior of the base, thus preventing heaving and settling of the post, and imparts to it greater solidity in the ground, thus being less liable to blow over and to be affected by the action of the frost. The upper end of the base A. is provided with a tenoned end 6, which fits into a mor' tise in the lower end of the wood part B of the post, and is fastened therein by bolts a, which attach the wooden part to the base. The base is provided with an upwardly-extended flange 6 on two of its opposite sides, which flanges come against the outersurface of the lower end of the wooden part B, thus forming a seat for the end of the wooden part and preventing it from splitting and twisting, and imparting greater strength where the base joins the wood part.
The wood part B of the post may be all one piece or may be made from strips bolted together, as here shown, the latter plan perhaps being preferable so far as cheapness and strength are concerned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The post comprising the wooden upper part having the mortise in the lower end and the hollow pointed base with side perforations, said base being provided with the side upper flanges, and the central hollow tenon in the mortise of the post and bolted therein, subs antially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoingI have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
his JACOB LEEVER.
