LAMBERT B. ERWIN, OF FENTON, ILLINOIS.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,250, dated September 14, 1880. Application filed July 17, 1830. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
`Fenton, in the county ot' Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Self-Supporting Spring-Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation ot' the saine, reference being had to the annexed dra\vings,.nr.tkin g apart ot' this specilication, and to the letters and iigures ot reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ot' a perspective View ot' my improved fence, and Fig. 2 is a detail.
This invention has relation to improvements infelices; and it consists in afence const-ructed and operating substantially as set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the end posts ot' a panel of my improved fenee, formed usually ot stout bar-iron, bent at intervals into loops or eyes a, and provided at their lower ends with points b, by.
means of which the said posts are driven into the ground.
B indicates the longitudinal wires of the panel, composed ot' two or more sections, s, according to its length, which sections are also bent into loops or eyes c at proper intervals for the reception ot' the vertical wires or pickets d, which extend through the loops c, and are then bent around the body of the longitudinal wires B, as indicated at c.
The wires B are passed through the loops a,
tautened, looped, as at f, and carried to the next post ofthe adjoining panel.
The ad joining ends ot the sections s are bent into spiral form, as indicated at it', around each other, the extremities of the said spirals being loose and 1' Oint.ing. in the same or in opposite directions. There are two or more twists in each wire at the joint, and a hinge is thus made which allows the panel to be folded up in compact form and carried to whatever place desired.
The intimate union of all the parts of the panel renders it exceedingly springy, so that it' pushed to either side by an animal leaning against it it will return to its straight pose as soon as released.
The panel thus constructed may be pro vided with barbs, if desired.
by Letters Patent, is-
The fencepanel consisting ot' the end posts, looped at intervals and having the end drivepoints, I), the longitudinal wire-sections s, looped at intervals, iiexibly connected at their contiguous ends, and extending through the loops of the end posts, and the vertical sup- Vporting-wires, wires s, looped around the body of the same, and carried above and below the uppermost and lowermost ot' said wires s, substantially as specilied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence ot' two witnesses.
