v citizen of the United States, and a resident of Conway, in the county of Rockcastle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVire- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in wire stretchers adapted for use in constructing wire fences, either of ordinary strands of wire or of woven wire material, such as commonly used in fence construction; and the inven tion consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of my invention as in use in connection with a woven wire fence fabric. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the wire cutter. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the double hook connection.

As shown, the stretcher has a bodyor main frame A and is provided midway between its ends with a drum B, whose shaft is provided with a ratchet wheel 0 engaged by a pawl D actuated by a spring E and a handle F is slidable across the face of the ratchet wheel and operates between pins G on opposite sides of the central stud H, which operates in the slot of the handle and permits the same to be slid longitudinally as may be desired in the operation of the invention.

The handle bar F may be slid longitudinally toward one end or the other in order to permit it to pass a rock, tree or other obstruction, the central slot permitting such adjustment and the pins G stopping the bar firmly when adjusted to any of its positions.

The stretching chain I is secured to the drum and passes through an opening J in the rear end of the main frame and has secured to it the connecting hook L which is provided with the long hook M and the short hook N, which may operate in connection with the chain 0 secured at one end of a woven wire fence fabric, as shown in Fig. 1, the long hook and short hook being engaged as shown with the upper and lower portions, as may be desired in securing the desired stretching of the wire. At its end opposite the opening for the stretching line the main frame is provided with opposite anchor hooks P which may be passed partially around a post, as best illustrated in Fig. 2 and hooked into engagement with the post in order to anchor the stretcher securely in position.

At one end of the main frame I provide the fixed section Q of the wire stretcher, the said section Q being in the form of a plate, recessed in the main frame and rigidly secured thereto and a movable section It of a cutter is pivoted to the fixed section and has a handle S operating within the bail T secured to the main frame, the said bail being elongated laterally at one side of the main frame to limit the movement of the cutter, as may be desired in the operation of the invention.

The staple puller U has the claw V at one end for pulling staples and is provided with a shank which may be set in a socket X in the main frame and secured by a clamp screw Y, as shown.

Manifestly in the operation of the invention when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the drum may be forcibly operated to tighten the fence material, as desired and the 1on and short hooks of the hook section will be found especially useful in stretching wire fabric in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1.

I claim:

1. The wire stretcher herein described, comprising the main frame provided at one end with the opposite reversely projecting anchor hooks and having an opening at its other end for the passage of the stretching line, a drum journaled to the main frame midway between its ends, having at one end a ratchet wheel and a pawl for engaging the same, and provided on the face of the ratchet wheel with a central stud and with stop pins on opposite sides thereof, a handle lever slotted between its ends for the passage of the stud and engaging with the stop pins on opposite sides of the said stud, and the stretc ing line secured to the drum and having a hook connection provided with long and short hooks, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
