J. J. SINGLEY.
FENGE POST.
Patented Feb. 5
@Seph JS m l. P
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. SINGLES", OF EL DORADO, KANSAS.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,676, dated February 5, 1895.
Application filed April 16, 1894. Serial No. 507,758- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OSEPH J. SINGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Dorado, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts; and it has for its object to provide certain im* provements in fence posts adapted for the support of fence wires or wooden rails.
To this end the main and primary object of the present invention is to provide a simpie and strong fence post, and more particularly to provide means for securely mounting or anchoring the fence post so that the same will always remain rigidly in position and will therefore be durable and very efficient for the purpose of properly supporting the wires or rails to sustain the fence.
With these andother objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence post constructed and mounted in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional View thereof including the supporting base. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective view of the fence post separated from the base.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the supporting base of a fence post as adapted to be placed in the ground at the point where the fence post is to be located, and said supporting base consists of a rectangular or other shaped block of natural or artificial stone, or tile where it is not convenient to employ the stone. The said sup porting base 1, is provided in the top thereof with the cylindrical post socket 2, that is adapted to receive the cylindrical foot block 4. The cylindrical foot block 4, is made of cast iron that is castpermanently onto the lower end of the metal post 5, and said cylindrical cast iron foot block 4, is provided at one side near its upper end with the short off-standing stop shoulder 6, that is adapted to engage at the upper edge of the socket in the top of the supporting base 1, to limit the insertion of the foot block therein and to prevent it from settling out of position after the post has been set up. The cylindricai cast iron foot block 4, is further provided at one side with the inclined flattened face 7, that together with the rounded side of the socket in which the block is inserted forms a wedge shaped keyseat adapted to receive the wedge fastening key 8. The wedge fastening key 8, is of the same shape as the wedge shaped key seat formed by the flattened side or face 7, of the foot block, and being adapted to be firmly forced into position, provides means for tightly wedging the block 4: in the supporting base, and thereby securely and rigidly positions the fence post while at the same time providing means whereby the post may be separated from the supporting base and replaced together therewith in another position if found necessary or desirable. The said wedge fastener 8, may be made of any suitable material such as a wedge of iron or stone, and may comprise a packing of broken stone or gravel such as may be readily filled or wedged into the key seat, depending largely upon the facilities at hand for securing the fastening.
The metal post 5,consists of an upright bar of flange iron or steehor may consist of a perfectly straight bar of such metal, and is provided with a series of openings or holes 9, drilled therein to receive the fastening wire or staple 10, for the fencing material 11, whether of wire or wood, and this completes a construction of fence post that will be durable, strong, and will be rigidly held in its mounted or anchored position. 7
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in vention.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat onto the lower end of said postand adapted to loosely and removably register in said socket, said cylindrical foot block being provided at one side near its upper end with a stop shoulder adapted to engage at the upper edge of the socket, to prevent settling of the block and at its opposite side with an inclined flattened face forming a key seat, and a wedge fastening key adapted to be forced into the to key seat against the inclined flattened side or face of the foot block, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
' JOSEPH J. SINGLEY.
Witn esses THOS. J. THOMPSON, W. J. WILLOUGHBY.
