Description

I. H. (MRMAII.`
I Fence. Y NQ. 224,387. Patented Feb.1o, 1880.-
NAFETJIS.. FHOTGLITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON. Dv C.
" I vUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
isAAo H. oARMAN, or NEW aoss,fiND IANA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 224,387, dated February 10, 1880.
' Application filed October 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC H. GARMAN, of New Ross, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences;and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact (le-scription of the invention, which will enable others lskilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein ghad to the-accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a fencesection embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one of the posts with its brace;
and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of oneof the posts detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all Jthe figures.
, The object of my invention is to construct a cheap and durable fence, which may be used either as astationary or portable fence at the option of the purchaser; and it consists in the construction of a metallic fence-post consisting of two parts, which mutually support and brace each other, and also in the construction of fence-sections made with the said-posts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described. i
In the drawings, A is the post, which is made of light bar-iron, ianged on one side, as shown at a, to increase its strength and rigidity. n
lA' is a brace, constructed in like manner as the main post A, to which it is united at the top by bolts b b, which also serve to fasten the top rail upon the post. The iiangesaJ a are cut away at each end of the post A and brace A,and the lower ends are bent outward to forln feet or supports C C,.by which the posts are anchored in or upon the ground where the fence is to be erected.
To construct va fence-section two or more postsare used, (in the present' illustration of my invention I have shown three posts,) across which are placed the rails B B, secured, removably, by nuttedbolts c c. These rails are so arranged from top to bottom as to break joints with each other, and their ends are cut off obliquely to t the meeting ends of the rails of the adjoiningsection. Each of the rails is secured `upon each post by two bolts, as shown in the drawings, except at the end where it is cutoi obliquely, where only one bolt is used, so as to leavea bolt and bolt-hole for the adjoining ends of the next section.
If it is intended to build this fence perma nently on the ground, holes are dug large enough-to receive the supports C C of the posts ,and these are. anchored by placing a nC are placed upon the surface of the ground and anchored by stones, or they may be fastened down upon the ground by headed stakes D, as shown'in Figs. l and 2.
This fence can be made at a small cost; is easily taken apart and packed for shipment; will standthe heaviest gale when properly put up, and isabsolutely cattle-proof. Besides, it is neat and attractive in appearance, easily handled in erecting or takingdown, and
,by varnishing or painting the posts and bolts l it will last many years without requiring repair or attentions 4 d Y Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A metallic fence-post consisting of the parts A A', provided with iianges a a', which are cut away at the top'and bottom of said parts, these being united at the top or apex by bolts b b and bent outward` at their lower ends `to form dat feet or supports C `C,'sub stantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. A fence section or panel composed of a series of metallic posts, each of which consists of an inclined bar, A, supported by an inclined brace, A', and united thereto at .the top by bolts b vb the lower diverging ends of the post and brace A A being bent outward to form the feet C C', and the parallel rails B B, bolted upon theV posts and cut off obliquely, so as to break joints with each other in uniting two or more sections, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown an speciiied.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. l.
