Letters Patent No. 88,523, dated Ma/rch 30, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE? The Schedule referred to in these Lett em Patent: and maklng'part of the same- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD O. H. SMITH, of Belpre, in the county of Washington, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts whereever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and usemy invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to portable fences; and consists of a new and improved method of arranging the boards and post together, so that they are heldfirmly without nails.
In the drawings- Figure l is a perspective view; 7
Figure 2 is a view of the post or couplings at the end of a section; and
Figure 3 is a view of the bars D and E, as prepared and arranged for use.
I first take. the base, A, as shown in fig. 1, and lay it in the ground where I purpose to build the fence, when I take the post B,-holding the brace O O, secured to the post B by a small bolt, H, as shown in fig. 2, and extend the brace G G on a line with the red mark, as shown in fig. 2, with the end of post B placed in mortises 2 of the base A. v I then take the bar D,'and place one end in the mortise 4 of post B, from each side, as shown in fig. 1,-with the notch in bar D up,
and repeat the same in 'mortises 3, with thenotch down. I then place the bars E in mortises 1 and 2 of post B, when I take the ends of brace G O, and bring them down to the base A, and place them in the dovetailed mortises 1 and 3 of the base A, as shown in fig. 2. I then take a key, K, and drive through mortises 1 and 3 of the base A at the end of the brace G O, as shown in fig. 2, and have them extend ten or fifteen inches in the ground, when they hold the fence firmly in one place, and also form a lock thatunites the whole fence together, as you repeat the sections, and continue the fence, as shown in fig. l.
By this arrangement, I make a portable fence, strong and firm, without nails.
The object of my invention is to make a portable fence, that is easily taken down, moved, and reset again, without nailing; and this I believe my portable-fence arrangement will do.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, is-
1. The combination of post B, braces O 0, bolt H, and notched bars D D, as and for the purpose described, when these several parts are arranged as set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the key K, inserted in the dovetailed mortise in the base A, as and for the purpose specified.
SANFORD G. E. SMITH.
