Description
titled sala ROBERT MCFARLANE, OF DANE, WISCONSIN.
Letters .Patent No. 90,280, dated Ma/y 18,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.
The Scnedule referred to m these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT MGFARLANE, of the town of Dane, in the county of Dane, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, likeV letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, remarking that It consists in producing a fence, simple and cheap in its construction, and one that can readily be erected, or, when erected, as readily taken down, and put up in another place, as desired.
This I accomplish by the use of plain and simplyconstructed lengths of fence, double braces, stakes, and bolts, and by uniting them in a novel manner, as hereinaiter described.
In the drawing- Figure l represents a `plan View of my portable fence.
In constructing my fence, I iirst make lengths, A, by ripping, 0r sawing common boards lengthwise into parts, or strips, F, of any desired number, and con necting a sucient number of them to end-pieces B, made of two, or two-and-a-half-inch stuii", to forni a length suitable in height and strength for the fence desired. These lengths may be made of paling, when preferred, but for ordinary farm use, the strips are the cheapest and best, as shown in the drawing. I then. ont of the same, or other material suitable for the p'nrpose, make a double brace, D, connecting the legs of the brace with a ,centre hatten, E, in the manner and form also shown in the drawing, and, at the same time, get out any required number of stakes, O, of
Athe purpose.
any convenient wood, suicicntly strong and durable for the purpose, as well as of the proper si'ze.
In erecting my fence, I first drive the stakes C into the ground, at proper distances apart, so that the lengths A will set conveniently between them; and between the lengths A, and immediately over the stakes, I set the double braces D, each stake having been driven far enough into the ground to allow the centre hatten E to rest upon its top, and the feet of the braces to rest firmly upon, or enter the soil a short distance. This done, I fasten the whole together by bolts, or pins, a, putting one of them through the upper ends of the end-pieces B, and the upper end, or head of the braces D, and the other through the lower ends of the end-pieces and the head of the post, or stake, as shown in the drawing, the propel' holes having been made for The pins a, may be removable.
In this way I readily construct a fence, of any desired length, for farm, or other similar use.
In order to remove and set it up iu another locality, it is only necessary to take out the pins a, take down the lengths and the braces, and pull up the stakes, carry the whole to the place desired, and set` it up again, in a similar manner.
All this can be done by any ordinary held-hand, or the farm-hand, without the aid of skilled labor.
Having thus described my invention,
The method of constructing a portable fence of lengths A, braces D, and stakes C, by uniting them with pins a, for supporting the structure upon, and attachingit to the ground, substantially as herein described.
ROBERT MCFARLANE. Witnesses.-
E. KNUTEsoN, R.'LINDSAY.
