lM PROVEMENT l-N FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,358, dated June 25, 1878; application filed November 10, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL CRAIG, of North Benton, Mahoning county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence panel constructed of or from boards. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same constructed from rails. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the engaging ends of panels, like that shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the post employed in the construction of panels similar to that shown in Fig. 2.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

"The design of my invention is to enable a portable fence to be cheaply constructed and easily and quickly placed in or removed from position; and it consists, principally, in the peculiar construction of the post and its combination with the horizontal rails, substan tiallly as and for the purpose hereinafter specitier It consists, further, in the fence as a whole, its several parts being constructed and combined to operate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown.

In the annexed drawing, A and A represent two wooden bars, which are formed of or from board, and have, preferably, the proportions shown in Fig. 5, and are heldin relative position by means of two blocks, B, that are placed between their inner faces near their upper and lower ends, after which a bolt, 0, is passed horizontally through said bars and each block, so as to bind the same firmly together. The lower bolt 0 passes through the upper end of a stake, D, and confines the same firmly to the bars A, so that when said stake is driven into the ground it furnishes a support for the lower end of the post, while the upper end of said post is secured in lateral position by means of a brace, E, which is secured at its upper end. to or upon the same by the upper bolt 0, and from thence extends outward and downward into the ground.

The posts thus constructed are now ready for the reception of rails F, which, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4, are alternately laid from oppo site directions, so that their lapping ends support each other, and said ends are, in turn, supported by the blocks B.

When it is desired to make a more finished fence the rails F are cut to length, so that their ends will extend to the transverse center of each post, and one of the bars A of the latter is secured by nails firmly upon the ends of an entire panel, so as to hold the same firmly in relative positions.

In erecting these panels the ends of two panels are placed together, with the bars A upon opposite sides, and the ends of the rails F meeting, after which the bolts O are emp105 ed, as before, for confining said bars together and to the stake D and brace E, the blocks B being omitted.

If desired, a top board, Gr, may be secured to or upon the upper rail of each panel, its ends being arranged to coincide with the ends of said rail at the transverse center of each post, so that when the fence is in place said top boards shall be continuous.

The fence thus constructed is easily made by the most ordinary workman at a trifling cost, and when erected is strong and durable.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 1. The hereinbefore-described post, consisting of the bars A and A, blocks B and B, supporting-stake l), brace E, and bolts 0 and 0, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The hereinbefore-described fence, consisting essentially in the bars A, stakes D, braces E, rails F, top board G, and binding-bolts O, constructed substantially as shown. g
