Description
@uitrit taten getint @Hire JACOB soUTHWIeK, 0F BRANT, NEW YORK.'
Letters Patent Nrn-81,836, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N rsNcns.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known thatI, IJACOB SOUTHwIcK,of Brant, in the county of Erie, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof',` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and generator-rangement of a portable board fence, Aso that the same can be put 'up or taken down without any trouble, and without driving or removing any nails whatever.
In order to enableothcrs skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a. part of this specification, and' in which- Figure l is a side view, and
Figure 2 an end view.
A A represent the fence-posts, each of which is composed of two square pieces of timber, locked together at the top and spreading ont at the bottom, forming a brace, as shown in fig. 2, A
These posts may be made ot any material or timber desired, as they are seton the surface and not into the earth.
Each length of the fence is composed of` boards, B B, nailed together by three strips of wood, C C, one near each end, and one in the centre. The loweredges ofthe ends of the upper boards are notched or provided with hooks, to hang or rest on the crotch formed by the pieces of timber forming. the fence-posts, and pins, a a, pass through the top of the posts and the ends of the boards, thus holding them securely. The second board from the top rests on a strip of board, F, nailed across the posts, as shown in iig. 2.
Each length of the fence'is made fast, by means of a. stake, E, runningthrough a stirrup, D, in the centre, and driven into the ground.
This fence is considerably cheaper than nnyvother board fence, and can be so easily put up, and it will be seen that any length can be taken out, by merely removing the pins a a' and loosening the stake E, without 4drawing a single nail, or in1 the least injuring theboards.
Having thus fully described vmy invention, what I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A portable board fence, when Aconstructed as described, the fence-posts A A being formed of two pieces, locked together near the top, and spreading at the bottom, and the panels each consisting of boards B B, confined together by strips C C, and hung on the fence-posts A A, the whole being secured by pins a a and stakes E E, substantially as herein set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto` set my hand, this 8th day of July, 1868.
JACOB SOUTHWICK. Witnesses:
