Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ WM. H. BROWN, O F STOGKWELL, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,895.. dated August 7, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN, of Stockwell, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of a portion of my improved felice. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig.3 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line a', Fig. 2.
Similar `letters of reference indicate like parts. l
My invention has for its object to furnish a cheap, durable, and convenient fence 5 and it consists, trst, of `the combination of the connecting-blocks and inclinedcorner stakes or braces With the panels of the fence; second, in the combination of the .long poles or rails and stakes with each other andV with the panels of the fence, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter .more fully described.
A are the panels of the fence, which may be made of sawed or split timber or of poles, as the circumstances of each case may render advisable. These panels A may be of any convenient length and of such a height as the purposes of the feneemay render necessary. The number of horizontal bars or rails in each panel will also depend upon the purposes of the fence. Three will be suicient; butif the fence is designed to stop` smaller animals the number of horizontal bars must be increased. The central part of the panels is strengthened by upright bars a2, to which` the horizon tal bars of the panels are securely attached, the top of the said uprights a2 being Hush with the top of the fence. The end uprights, a', of the panels` A project a little above the tops and` below the bottoms of said panels, and have round l tenons formed upon the said projecting ends, as shown in the drawings. The panels are connected together by blocks B and C, which have holes in them fitting up- Von the tenons formed on the ends of the up` rights a', as shown in the drawings.
The fence, when erected, is set in a zigzag direction, as shown in Fig. 3, and itis strengthened at the corners by inclined stakes or braces D, the lower ends of which are set in the ground and their upper ends rest against the upper blocks, B, asI shown. When the fence is thus formed any desired panel may be used as a gate, for by removing a block, B, at one corner, either or both the adjacent panels may be swung open as a gate.
When it is desired that the felice should be made higher and stronger long poles or rails E and F are" placed upon the tops of the panels A, running in the direction lof the central line of the fence, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. These poles or rails E and F are secured in place upon the fence by inclined stakes G,
which cross each other, as shown, holding the lower rails, E, in psition upon the panels A, and supporting the top rails, F. The lower top rails, E, are further secured by pins or spikes H, driven through the said top rails, E, and into the upper ends ofthe central upright bars, a2, as shown in the drawings.
It should be observed that the panels A may be made in the winter season,.ror when the farmer has no other work to do, or when the weather is such that he cannot ,work out of doors,`and the fence set up whenever needed.
Itshould also be observed that four or more of the panels A may be used for making a temporary pen whenever such a structure is needed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The c'mbination of the blocks B and C and inclined corner stakes D with the panels A, when the blocks, stakes, and panels are constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the long poles or rails E F and stakes Gr'with the panels A of the fence, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. Combining the lower top rails, E, with the` tops of the uprights a?, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM` H. BROWN.
