Description

0. s. s. GRIPPI'NG. Pence.
No.197,846. Patented De c. 4,1877.
[Ill/612E117 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. S. GRIFFING, OF. COLUMBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT .lN FENCES.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197, 846, dated December 4, 1877; application filed November 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. S. GRIF FING, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification:
On the 28th day of April, 1868, I took out LettersPatent on portable fences, N 0. 77,371, on applying which I found them, especially in prairie countries, liable to be blown over; and I have therefore resorted to several modes for securing or bracing the same, and have adopted that which is the subject of this application, which I have found at once to be the cheapest and most efficient.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the post.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of identical parts.
The post, as describedinmy said originalLetters Patent, consists of a bottom piece, A, two
inclined braces, B B, fastened to the top brace O, and the two parallel vertical boards D D, between which the panels were placed, resting upon the parallel pieces A C.
To secure the posts in place, I drive into the ground anchors E E, made of boards sharpened at the bottom, and having at the top parallel edges, fitting neatly into the space between the parallel vertical boards D I) of the post, and projecting far enough above the ground to hold the posts rigidly in position, so that they cannot be upset by lateral pressure against the fence. I have found such anchors sufficient to hold the fence rigidly in position against the force of very heavy gales of Wind. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the fence, the posts of which are formed with vertical parallel boards D D and connected braces, substantially as shown, the anchors E E, with parallel edges corresponding to the spaces between the boards D D, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. S. S. GRIFFING.
