Description
N-IPEYERS. PHDTU-LITHOGRAPHsR, WASHINGTON. D CV @anni Ghiiiiiw- THOMAS WESTERMAN, OF CLINTON TOWNSHIP, PENNsYLVmvA.V
Letters Patent No. 94,262, dated August 3K1, 1869.
IMPRO'VEMENT IN FENCES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.l
To all whom it 'may concern Beit known that I, THOMAS WESTERMAN, of Glinton township, Butler county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence; and
I- db hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact-description thereof, reference beiughad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the panels of a zigzag 'feucewith braces arranged with relation to the fence, as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilledfin the art to-make and use my invention, I will proceed to desclibe its construe# tion and operation.
- .lhe panels are composed of posts 2 and rails l.
The rails are provided with notches 3, as represented in iig. 3. The rails 1 are secured to the posts 2 by means ot' nails, as in constructing ordinary board-fence.
The notches 3, in the rails 1, are used for the purpose of looping7 or locking the panels',l together, asl
shown at x', in rigs. 1 and 2.
0 represents a brace, which is secured on the upper rails, extending across the angle formed by thej unction of the panels. r The brace C is' notched out at each end, so that it ,will extend down below the topredge of the upper rails of panels A and B, and is arranged with relation to the posts and angle in the fence, as shown iu figs. 1 and 2.
The brace may be secured iI position by nailing'it to the'posts 2, if it is so desired. y
D represents a rod, with hooked ends, which hook .into staples x, as shown in fig. 2.
Theadvantage of bracing the panels of a zigzag fence by means and in the manner herein described are two-fold: rst, it forms acheap and efficient brace, and holds the panels of fence, constructed as herein described, in a very rm and fixed position; second, it prevents cattle and other animals from jumping the fence,7 which is a very great consideration with farmers. l
I wish it clearly understood that I do not claim' broadly notches tn therails of a panel-fence.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention, isf l Providing the rails -1 with notches 3, one notch being in the upper edge and the other notch in the lower edge of the rails, and -used in combination with the braces O and D, for bracing the panels A and B, as
herein described. THOMAS WESTERMAN.
