Description
I @eine artnet t'ftrr.`
` JOHNUGSPURGER, 0F TRENTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 63,827, dated April 16, 18,67.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
TO WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN AUGSPRGER, of Trenton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and usefu Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to a light, portable fence, easily moved from place-to place, and quickly set up and connected whore desired, Without the labor of digging post-holes, at the same time that it forms a firm fence, and cannot be lifted or disconnected by snine to get under. nor pushed over by cattle, nor easily blown down by the wind, but is quickly and easilysepara'ted and removed, by the proprietor, when desirable The drawing represents a `portion of two panels of my fence as set up, showing the mode of connecting them.
I construct my fence in lengths or panels, as light asconsistent with strength, consisting of two posts A and B, of unequal length, connected by a siiitablenumber of rails, (preferably iive,) with a brace, eithor diagonal or vertical, about the mid-length of each panel.f The post A at one end of each panel is only of sufficient length for the attachment of thev rails, but the other, B, is longer, leavinga foot to supportthe panel above the ground of such length as may be necessary, a foot being thus furnished at eachjoint. The top, bottom, and centre rails, more or less, of each panel, extend at each end beyond the posts, and are gained out, C, for half their; width, the
gains being in the upper side at the end having the supporting foot, and in the under side at the other end.
The panels are connected by engaging the gains of one panel in the corresponding ones of the next, as shown, and-are set upon the ground in a worm or zigzag form, so that each panel serves as a brace for those adjacent, thus securing the firmness and rigidity ofthe fence. To secure the Connection of the panels from accidental disengagement by the operations of hogs or cattle, one or more of the intermediate rails a b have tongues alternately upon their upper and lower edges, which, engaging under and over eachother in the manner shown when the fence is set up in itszigzag position, prevent the lifting of the upper panel. A cleat or block, D, may be attached to' the foot cf each long post,.to serve as an anchor-by being placed below the surface ofthe ground, the post being somewhat longer when this plan is adopted.
I claim herein as new, andof my invention- I. The construction of a light, portable fence,` in lengths or panels, with one short and one long post',,sub stantially as shown and described, to be connected and securedl Vin a worm or zigzag shape, by meansof the prolonged and gained 'ends of certain of the rails, and the notched and tongued intermediate rails, as a b;
2. I also claim, in combination with the elements of the first clause, the additional block D, attached to the end of the supporting foot of each panel, to serve as an anchor to give "the fence additional firmness.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN AUGSIURGER.
