SPECIFICATION. Y Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BILLINGS, 'of Lyons, Clinton county, and State of Iowa, have inventeda new and useful method of constructing Portable Fences; and I do lhereby Vdeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexeddrawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a section. Figure 2, a longitudinal elevation of straight fence. Figure 3, a view ofa'z-igzag or Virginia fence. Figure 4, a view of a circular or hurdle fence. To enable others'to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

I make round 'balusters or pickets, which vare put through holesl bored through rails, as shown in c c, figs.` '1, 2, 3, and 4 and for` a straight fence, as fig. 2,' I construct posts as at iigs. 1 and 2, with a cap piece, D, which fits a tenon onv the top of post A, and has a hole through the otherV end for picket to pass through, as 'at D, lig. 1; the picket, P, is let intothe shoulder of the post, A, at bottom, as shown by thedotted'lines.` l NowaA I -set the posts {irmly in the ground, and bring the frames together, one rail above the other, andrinsert the picket', P, through the cap, D, the two top and two bottomY rails to its`place in the post, which holds the `panels together and makes the fencr'm. To accommodate the fence to .the uneven surface ofthelground, I cut'a slot.

Now,'to take down, to remove any of these, I have but to remove the picket, P, and the panels can be at once loaded on a wagon and taken to another point and'set up again, with no wasteof lumber and but little time.
