Description
glatten tnt stent @frn IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
@Llp tlgchult referat tu in tlgrst tcttttsgntnxt inn matting putt t tige sans.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY. CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SMITH MILES, of Fabius, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York,'hare invented a. new and useful improvement in PortableFences; and I do hereby declare the following tio be a truc and full explanation anddescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fence on level land, and
Figure 2 is a front View of my fence on rolling land, like letters referring to like parts in both drawings.
The construction of my improved portable fence is as follows, viz: I use ordinary fence-boards, about one inch thick by four to six inches wide` as shown at A A A A, and posts of' any goed timber, as shown at B B B. These posts are about twoinehes thick, and about three inches wide-generally using three of these posts to each lengt-,h offence. To these posts the boards are nailed, as clearly shown'in the drawings. To brace my fence laterally I use two braces to each length, as seen at C C, made of hard wood, about one inch thick and three inches wide, sharpened at one end and notched at the other, so that one end may be driven into the ground, as seen at d d, and the other end notched ou to the upper fence-board, as seen at E E. While these two braces rmly support one end of a panel of fence the other end is firmly supported hy being strongly bolted to the braced end of the next length, as shown at F in tig. 1, on level land; but for rolling land it is bolted to the side of' t-he next length, in order to permit each post to shut by the other, and thus allow the opposite end of the panel to drop or rise for rolling land. The tops of the braces are held in position by the pins G G.
Much experience in the construction of portable felices has shown this plan to possess great superiority in practical use, and also that there are few improvements so important to'the farmer as such a convenient and economical portable fence. l
Having thusfully described my improved portable fence, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The peculiar construction and arrangement whereby each length may be supported at one end by two lateral braces, and at the other by being bolted endwise to the braced end of the next panelen level land, as shown in fig. `1, and connected by bolting sidewlse, as shown in tig. 2, i'or rolling land, substantially as and for the purposes described. ,l
SMITH- MILES.
