JAMES GODFREY, ,or 'ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Lenm'ram No. 94,199, dafedliugusfsi, 1869.
4IMPROVE:MENT IN FENCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Tol all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEsGoDFnnY, of the city and county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, l
have invented a new and usefulV Improvement in Fence; and I do hereby declare that the yfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.'
The nature of my invention consists in pivoting rails to the posts or' the fence, and, providing each panel of the fence with a triangular (in cross-section) post, and bracing the panels by means of rail and bolt, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating as hereinafter described.
:To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will .proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form partof my specification- Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement in fence.
Figures 2 and 3 are top views or plans of the same.
In the drawingsf and f represent the rails of each panel of the fence. l
The rails f extend beyond the triangular posts b, as indicated at 1.
The rails are pivotedl to the posts a and b by means of rivets and washers, as indicated at 2.
The objectof pivoting the rails f and f to the posts aand 71 is to adapt the fence to the surface of the ground, thereby making the fence suitable for level or hill land.
By thns pivoting the rails to the posts, the panels of fence may be set at any desired angle, with rela-- tion to eachother, as shown by the lines marked x.
The triangular posts b are usedv for the purpose of giving firmness at the junction of the panels.
The advantage4 of the angular post bin a zigzag fence will be apparent by`a reference 'to iigs. 2 and 3, in the accompanying drawings. v
In setting up the fence, the extended portion l of the rails f are inserted in the openings x. (See iig. 1.)
The fenceis braced by means of the rail h., which is placed between the rails, and held inthe desired position by meansof a bolt, c, and screw-nut, d, as
shown in fig. 2, or by means of a hook, as shown in 3.
.gThe-form of the brace-rail is clearly shown at h., i'n Bg. 1, and the form of the bolt c is clearly shown in fi'g. 2. The form of the hook e is indicated in iig. 3.
-By combining the bolt c or hook e with rail h, in bracing the panels of the fence together, they combine firmness with the advantage of preventing any displacement'of the rail h.
Having thus desclibed the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention, is`
1. Providing each panel of a fence with a post, b, which is triangular in form, when viewed in cross-section, and pivoting the rails ff to the posts a. and b, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In connection with the above, the braceh. and bolt d, constructed, arramed, and operating as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
' JAMES GODFll'llY.
