Description
tnte time Letters Patent No. 94,124, dated August 24, ISQQ.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'who-m it may concern 13e it known that I, WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON, of Harrisburg, iu tbe county of Dauphin, and in the State of Pennsylvania, ha ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Postsrfor Fencing and otherA purposes; and do hereby declare that tbefollowng is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates` to an improvement on the metallic fence-post, for which Letters Patent were granted to me February 16, 1869, and consists in the construction of a metallic socket, with a soil or skeleton screw, to be used for holding wooden fence-posts in position.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which show a side view ot' my invention.
A represents a metallic socket', of any suitable size and shape, for the insertion of a wooden fencepost, 'l, of any of the known and usual styles.
At the bottom of the socket A is a circular plate, a, under which is along, slender loop, b d, whose tincs,
It d, run down inside. of spiral screw-threads, and are massed with said threads.
The loop l) (l is so made as to give the centre of the socket an enlarged bulk, about the usual size of a good wooden post-but, and is,` moreover, so shaped as to form a skeleton giinlet-screw.
The threads c e are distant enough to cut into the soil, without breaking the soil that lies between the threads, in the actief screwing it down to its place in the soil.
The skeleton form is, moreover, of use to enable stones or pebbles to pass from the sharp cutting edges of the threads, and `to be forced either up or down from the track of the threads, orto be lodged in the bellow inside of the screw.
Having thus fully described my invention,
. Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic' socket, provided with the soil or skeleton-screw l) (le, constructed as described, and used in combination with'tbe wooden fence-post B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing-I have hereunto set my hand,- this 11th day of August, 1869.
' WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON.
Witnesses A. N. MARR, U. L. lilvnn'r.
