Be it known that I, CORNELIUS G. LAZEAR, of Norwalk, in the county of Huron, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, `referenceV being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure]- is a perspective view, showing a corner. i

Figure 2 is a vertical section.

Figure 3 is an elevation, showing the end of a panel.

The same letters apply, in all the figures, to identical parts. t

A isapanel as finished for use. The boards are attached by the transverse pieces A. The projecting ends extend beyond the pieces `A are prepared by cutting notches under alternate boards near the end. The posts are crossed and braced as shown in fig. 2, the upper part being notched above the point of intersection to receive and aiord a firm bearing to the notch in the upper board. The notch in the third board rests on the tie brace D. These notches are wide enough to retain two boards side and side and hold them tightly. Short posts, C, are set midway between the fence posts, and to them is attached a hook, C', which hook enters an eye on the middle of the panel. The corner post B is square, with notched cleats, B', attached tothe outside faces to receive tlie notches in' the ends of the respective panels, which rest in the cleats on the corner, posts just as they do on the intermediate posts, D. It will be seen that the notches in the upper boards being square, and fitting in to square notches in the top of the posts D, the end of the board thus 'notched will rest against both the crossed posts, and thus hold them in line and prevent the pulling apart of the pieces constitutingsuch posts, which is found to be an objection to the bevelled notches used by others, as shown in Benning Rowell's patent of September 18, 1866.

What I claim as myrinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The panels A, and posts D, when respectively constructed as described, and used in combination with the intermediate posts C, and hooks C', for securing the panels in position, substantially as set'forth.

2. The panels A, in'combination with the posts C, and hooks C', and with the corner posts B, with cleatsV B', all i' said parts being respectively constructed, and the whole arranged for use, substantially as set forth.
