Description

antan, sulla WILLIAM H. wiLLIAMs, or
LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 101,691, dated Aprile?, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT I STREET-PAVEMENT.
The Schedule referred to in these'Itters Patent and making part of the same.
Io all wlzcm @t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H.`W1LL1AMs, of Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Pavement; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1v represents a partial plan or top view of this invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, some of the blocks having been left out to expose those behind.
Figure 3is a transverse section thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a pavement composed of blocks, each of which is c'nt from one of its bottom ends on an angle of about forty-five degrees toward -the top for about one-third of its height, and thence to the top perpendicular, so as to form a heel or projection at the bottom of one end, and a chamfer at the bottom of the opposite end on the same angle, in such a manner that, when the blocks are put in position, the chamfered end of one block catches over the heel or projection of the adjoining block, while the upper ends of the blocks preserve their square` shape, with the same surface and length on top as on the bot tom, and thereby a pavement is produced, each block ot" which is irmly retained in position by the adjoining block, and which presents an even, rm, and du` rable surface. The firmness of the pavement can be Vstill'further increased by reversing the heels in adjoining courses.
In the drawing- The letter A designates a pavementfblock, which will, by preference, be made of wood, but which may be made of any other suitable material, and which is provided at one of its bottom ends with a heel or projection, a., while its opposite end, b, is chami'ered olif, to receive the heel 01 projection of `the adjoining block. Y
The blocks are placed in courses upon boards or planks laid longitudinally or diagonally upon the surface of t-he ground, or any other suitable base prepared'for that purpose, and the adjoining courses oi' blocks are so arranged that they break joints, and
their heels point in opposite directions, whereby the firmness of the pavement is materially increased.
By this arrangement the upper ends of the blocks remain square, and they preserve theirlfull strength, while each block is held down by the adjoining block bearing on its heel or projection, and a firm and durable pavement is produced.
These blocks can be cut out without waste, as will be readily seen, if the blocks are placed together as shown in iig. 2 of the drawing.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' The blocks A A, constructed with parallel vertical sides, and respectively chamfered, and formed with angular projections, said projections and chamfers being located at the bottom edges of the blocks, as shown at u b a b, in the manner and for the purpose described.
The above specification signed by me this 19th day
