UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
FRANK LE R. TETAMORE AND SIDNEY E. FORDHAM, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
FASTENER FOR RETAINING THE HEAD'S'AND BOTTOMS IN BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,544, dated April 10, 18 83.
Application filed November 27, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK LE ROY TETA- MORE and SIDNEY EUGENE FORDHAM, both of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Retaining Heads and Bottoms in Barrels and other Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a part of abarrel to which our improvement has been applied, the improvement being shown in position for inserting the -head. Fig. 2 is the same view as Fig. 1,but showing theimprovement in position for fastening the head against coming out. Fig.3 is a front elevation of the improvement. Fig.4 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the same.
The object of this invention is to prevent the heads and bottoms of barrels and other packages from getting out of place.
The invention consists in a fastener for retaining the heads and bottoms in barrels and other packages, made of a metallic device having upon its lower end a downward extension provided with a point, and an upwardly-extending arm upon itsup'per end,whereby-when the said fastener is inserted in the croze of a barrel and its arm is be'nt down upon the head or bottom of the said barrel the said fastener will hold the said head or bottom securely in place, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Arepresents the staves of a barrel, the ends of which are chamfered in the ordinary manner.
B is the head, the edge of which is chamfered to fit into the croze O of the staves A in the ordinary manner.
D is a narrow metallic fastener, which is let into the staves A, so that its inner surface will be-flush with the surface of the croze'G. The
fastener D is made with a sharp outer edge, H, as shown in Fig. 5, so that it can be readily forced into the stave A. The lower part, E, of the fastener D is extended inward, and may be widened .to form a more substantial seat for the inner chamfer of the barrel-head B. Upon the inner extension, E, of the fastener D is formed a point, F, which is driven into the stave A a little below the croze C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Upon the upper end of the angular part I of D is formed an extension or arm, G, which extends upward along the chamfer of the stave A, so as not to interfere with the insertion of the head B, and which, after the said head is inserted, is bent down against the outer side of the head B to hold the said head from getting out of place outwardly.
The fastener I E F G is designed to be cast of malleable iron orother suitable metal, so that the arm G can be bent down against the head B to fasten the said head in place, and can be straightened without breaking, to allow the head B to be taken out.
Anydesired number of the fasteners I E F Gcan be used with each head or bottom B.
With this construction the heads and hottoms B will be held securely in place, and will not be liableto get out of place should the staves and heads shrink.
Another advantage of this improvement is thatit prevents the head B from passing be-,
yond the croze 0 when being inserted in the barrel. v
Havingthusdescribedourinvention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A barrel-head fastener consistin got a piece of metal shaped with a projecting corner, D, adapted to fit into the croze of the barrel, :1. spur-point, F, to enter the stave within the barrel, and a tang or projection, G, adapted to be bent over the edge of the barrel-head, as shown and described.
2. A barrel-head fastener consisting of a piece of metal shaped with a sharp bend, forming the projection D, adapted to fit into the croze of the barrel, and the inwardly-widened extension E, adapted to receive the edge of the barrel-head, the spur-point F to enter a stave within the barrel, and the tang or project-ion G, adapted to be bent against the outside of the barrel-head, as shown and described.
