Description

I. WINNE.
Patented 0ct.2,1877.
FASTENINGS FOR BOX-COVERS, &c. No 195.866.
I W'xmesses.
WM N
UNITED STATES PATENT rrron.
WILLIAM I. WINNE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR BOX-COVERS, 80c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,866, dated October 2, 1877; application filed April 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, WILLIAM I. WINNE, of the city and county of Albany andState of New York, have invented a new and useful Fastening Device for Securing the Covers of Boxes, Firkins, &c., of which the following is a full and exact description:
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and reliable fastening for securing the covers of boxes or other packages, whereby injury to the cover arising from the use of nails is entirely avoided, and the fastening may be removed, so as to be kept in continued use upon different packages, when desired.
The accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and to which reference is herein made, shows a perspective view of one of my fastenings as applied to a box only a small part of the box being shown,with a portion of the side broken away, so as to show the penetration of the lower points of the fastening therein.
As shown in the drawing, the fastening consists of a metallic rod, bent to form a bight at a, whereby two corresponding limbs, A, may be produced therefrom. The upper part, in which the bight is formed, lies upon the cover of the box. The two parts are then bent at B, so as to pass down at the side of the package;
and at O the two ends (which should be sharpened before the bends are made) are turned backward in the direction of the bight to form the points D, which penetrate the side of the box, as shown in the drawing.
In applying this fastening the upper part of it is pressed firmly down upon the cover, and the points D are driven into the side of the package, thereby holding the cover securely to its place. After the fastening is attached a staple, E, (shown in dotted lines,) or other suitable device, may be driven into the cover at the bight of the fastening, for the purpose of still further securing the fastening and retaining it with the cover, so that it (the cover) may be returned to its place, when required. To release the fastening, a pointed instrument may be inserted between it and the side of the package, so as to pry out the points.
I claim as my invention The fastening device herein described, consisting of a metallic rod bent at a, B, and U, and provided with the two points D, as and for the plu'pose herein specified.
WILLIAM I. WINNE.
