UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON E. MOORE, OF SWANTON, VERMONT.-
PACKAGE AND BOX COVER FASTE'NER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,417, dated June 12, 1883.
Application filed February 28, 1883. (No model.)
To all 1072 0712 it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoN E. MOORE, a-citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tub and Box Cover Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view, showing the fastener applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener.
This invention has relation to devices for fastening the heads or covers of tubs or wooden packages to the bodies thereof; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the elongated wire or wrought-metal shank portion having loop-form ends recurved to the shank portion and bent downward at right angles to the plane of the loops to form driveprongs, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of an ordinary butter-tub, and B the cover thereof.
0 represents the fastener whereby the cover is designed to be secured to the body of the tub. It consists of an elongated shank portion, d, of wire or Wrought metal, having the loop-form ends 6, which are recurved to the shank portion, and then bent downward at right angles to the plane of the loops to form the drive-prongs g. Each drive-prong is in this manner provided with a loop-forn1 head, 6, which is located beyond or outside of the drive-prong, as shown in the drawings.
The cover is fastened in position by using several of these devices, each being attached to the tub by driving one of its prongs therein, and then being bent over the edge of the cover and attached thereto by driving the other prong into said cover. In this operation the heads 6, being beyond the drive-prongs, tend to cause them to bend or turn inward or toward each other, so that they become, when driven, very firmly fixed and capable of standing a great strain.
Should it be required, the fastenings can be double-nailed, the additional nails or tacks being driven through the loop-heads c.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The cover-fastener for tubs and wooden pack ages, consisting of the elongated wire or wrought-metal shank portion (1, having loopform ends 6, recurved to the shank portion, and bent downward at right angles to the plane of the loops to form the drive-prongs g, of which the ends 6 form loop-heads, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLON E. MOORE.
