UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
GEORGE H. HOWELL AND JOHN KILEY, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA; SAID KILEY ASSIGNOR TO SAID HOWELL.
UPHOLSTERERS TOOL AND APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,221, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed October 12, 1894. Serial No. 525,738. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. HOWELL and J OHN KILEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of \Voodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Upholstering-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in fastening the buttons upon upholstery, in which a button with an extended shank adaptted to pierce the upholstery material and pro vided with barbs, notches, or corrugations upon its point is used in connection with a head or keeper pierced to permit the passage of said shank and provided with a spring or elastic grip adapted to seize and retain hold upon the notches, barbs, or corrugations of the said shank.
The objects of our improvement are to provide a speedy, economical, and efiicient method of fastening the buttons upon upholstery and to bind and fasten the same transversely, securing thereby the same results now obtained by sewing through and through with a needle and thread and tying. lVe attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aview of'our invention applied to an ordinary button and in place in the upholstery. Fig. 2 is a top view of the head or keeper, showing the perforation. Fig. 3 is a bottom View of the head or keeper, showing the clutching-points bent inward. Fig. 4 is a side view of the head or. keeper.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The button A, instead of the eye commonly used, is provided with an elongated shank which is pointed and furnished with barbs, corrugations, or notches I I. The shank may be of any length, but should be so adapted in this respect as to bring the notches I to the bottom of the upholstery material, permitting the point of the shank to protrude.
. notches I slope toward the button A. The
head or keeper B is provided with a perfora- The 7 tion 2. The keeper B is made, preferably, of sheet-brass or other spring metal and may be conveniently made in the following manner: A piece of metal is stamped out starshaped and the points 3 3 3 3 bent downward and inward until their points approach each other underneath the perforation 2. The points 3 3 3 3 cooperate with the notches, corrugations, or barbs I I in holding the head or washer in place.
It is obvious that the shank may be made round, square, flat, or any other shape.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described, and pointed out in the clai1nsas, for instance, a greater or less nu mber of points 3-without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described our invention, what we now claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
-1. In appliances of the class described, the head B with the perforation 2, and its points 3, 3, 3, 3, bent inward as shown, forming a grip or clutch substantially as above described, and for the purposes specified.
2. In appliances of the class described, the head B with perforation 2, and one or more points 3, bent inward as shown, forming a grip or clutch as above described, and for the purposes specified.
3. In appliances of the class described, the combination with a pin having an elongated shank provided with notches, barbs or corrugations, of the head B with its perforation 2 and one or more points, 8, bent inward as shown forming a grip or clutch substantially as above desoribed, and for the purposes specifled.
GEORGE II. HOWELL. JOHN KILEY.
