Description

W. L. DENNISON.
BEDCLOTHES FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED 05c. 23, 1913.
Patented July 20, 1915.
WILLIAM L. DENNISON, 0F COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BEDGLOTHES-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. .iPatented July 20 1915,
Application filed December 23, 1913. Serial No. 808,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DENNI- sox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fasteners for securing bed clothing and the like to beds.
An important object of my invention is to provide a fastener of the character described which employs novel means for permitting its adjustment for securing bed clothing of different thicknesses upon different sized mattresses.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a fastener of the character described which consists of a pin adapted to be inserted through the bed clothing and mattress and having a right angular extension at one end adapted to extend beyond the edge of the mattress when the pin is in secured position, a helical retractile spring secured at one end to the outer end of the extension and a hook member secured to the other end of the spring and adapted to engage the portion of the pin that extends beyond the under face of the mattress.
This invention further aims to improve fasteners of the character described so as to render them more practical, reliable and eflicient in operation, cheap to manufacture and more commercially desirable.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my fastener in operative position, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the fastener removed.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates an elongated pinformed ofs'ome suitably stiff 1 metal, and provided with a pointed end 2. The other end of the pin 1 is coiled once as i at 3 and bent to extend at right angles to the body portion thereof to form an extension arm 4.
A helical retractile spring 5 is secured at one terminal to the looped end 6 of the ex tension arm 4. A hook arm 7 is loosely secured as at 8 to the lower end of the spring 5 and is provided with an inwardly turned hook terminal 9 adapted to engage the pin 1.
To secure the fastener in operative positlon the pin 1 is inserted through the bed clothing designated A and mattress B until it is extended beyond the under face of the mattress sufliciently to enable the hooking of the arm 7 therewith. The pin is inserted so that the extension arm 4 lies in engagement with the clothing A so that the spring 5 engages the edge of the mattress B. The hook arm 7 is then swung so that its end 9 engages the extended part of the pin 1 and the clothing A is heldsecurely against accidental removal. desired adjustment of the device when thick bed clothing and a thick mattress are to have the fastener secured thereto.
It will beapparent with reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that there has been provided a novel fastener for securing bed clothing and the like against accidental removal, which is extremely simple as to construction, ca-
pable of being readily fastened in operative position, cheap to manufacture and not liable to derangement.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasizethe fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is A bed clothes fastener comprising a relatively long and straight pin, a right angularly extending arm formed integral with the unpointed end of the pin and arranged to extend beyond the outer edge of the bed The spring 5 permits the to Which the fastener is attached, an eye formed on the outer end of the arm, a retractile spring secured at one end to the eye,
a hook comprising a shank of approximately 5 the same length as the arm, an eye on the outer end of the hook shank, the other end of the spring being secured to the last named eye, said spring being of considerably less length than the pin, said hook being adapted 10 to engage the pin, said hook shank, spring and arm being arranged to hold the bed clothes upon the top, bottom and outer edge of the mattress of the bed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
