To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH MONJO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat pin point protectors, and has for its principal object to provide a device which is devised to protect the public from the points of hat pins.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will prevent a hat pin from being accidentally withdrawn and becoming lost or otherwise misplaced.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which not only serves to retain the hat pin, but also adds to its decorative effect.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a point protector constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same as it would appear when in use, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail top plan view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view on an enlarged scale of the point protector.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a hat pin of the usual type comprising the shank 2 having secured at one end the head 3. The opposite end of the shank is pointed in the usual manner and is arranged to penetrate the hat so as to permit the same to be held in place. The point protector, which is designated generally by the numeral 4., is shown as it would appear when in place and will be more fully hereinafter described.

This point protector 4 comprises the head 5 which is provided with the aperture 6 which is arranged to receive the point of the hat pin when the device is in use. Secured to the head and extending therefrom is the resilient arm 7 which is formed of a tempered wire to give the same the necessary resiliency and strength. This stem 7 termi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for nates at the end opposite the head in the shank clamping device which is designated generally by the numeral 8 and comprises the loop 9 which is formed on the end of the stem 7 and is extended upwardly as at 10. This upward extension terminates in the loop 11, the opposite end of which is bent downwardly and outwardly as at 12 and terminates in the loop 13, the end of which lies between itself and the loop 9 hereinbefore referred to as illustrated at 14.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that in use the shank of the hat pin is first inserted through the loop 11 as illustrated in the dotted lines in Fig. l. The same is then moved so that it will assume the position illustrated by the full lines, and in this position it will be apparent that the converging loops 9 and 13 will be forced outwardly and will thereby grip the shank of the pin and prevent the pin from becoming displaced.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the in vention as defined in the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

A hat pin point protector including a head, said head being provided with an aperture, a stem extending from the head in parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the aperture, a shank-engaging member formed at the opposite end of the stem, said shank-engaging member comprising a pair of converging loops, a transverse loop at the spaced ends of the converging loops, said transverse loop being arranged to receive the shank of a hat pin and being normally out of alinement with the aperture in the head, said loop being also arranged so that when a hat pin is inserted therethrough the same will be drawn upwardly to frictionally engage the shank and hold the same against movement and the converging loops will frictionally engage said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
