Be it known that I, CLARA B. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvemcntsin Safety-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in means for securing pins in place when inserted in a garment, and relates particularly to such pins as are used on articles of ornament or in safety-pins; and its object is to provide a guard for engaging the pin near the point thereof that will remain in engagement therewith and effectually prevent accidental detachment of the pin; and it consists, essentially, of a suitable spiral coil of wire or other flexible material adapted to yield toward and from the axis of the coil, and thus permit of the lateral insertion of the pin therein and to effectually retain the pin in place within said coil until manually removed therefrom, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my device attached to an oval ornament; Fig. 2, an under side plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 a side view of the same; Fig. 4, a modification of my device adapted to a safety-pin shown in side view; Fig. 5, an end view of the same, and Fig. 6 a view at right angles to Fig. 4.

Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.

A represents the aforesaid ornament; B, the usual pin, pivotally attached thereto at one end and pointed at the other end and extended across the back side of the ornament and at a distance therefrom.

0 represents a suitable piece of flexible wire or other like material attached in any convenient manner at one end to the back of the ornament A and extending along the same to near the end of the pin B, and thence extended in'a spiral coil of substantially uniform radius throughout first beneath the pin B and in contact with the back of the ornament A and thence upward and somewhat more than once around the pin B.

In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, Bis the pin, which consists of any flexible wire or other like material and is extended in the form of a coil at F, and thence extends parallel with the pin portion B, as at Ur, to near the point of the pin, and is thence turned toward the pin B and bent around the same in somewhat more than one turn of a spiral coil. To release the pin from this coil, it is necessary to manually spring the end E of the coil toward the axis of the coil and pass the pin between the same and the surrounding coil, and then spring the coil I) upward away from the back of the ornament A sufliciently to allow the pin to pass between the coil and ornament, and then spring the coil toward its axis in the opposite direction to the first-described movement, and thus permit the pin to pass to the outside of the coil.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the first movement of passing the end E under the pin is the same, and the spring portion F will then yield and permit the pin B to be sprung downward and pass around underneath and outside the coil D. It is evident that these simultaneous spring movements will not be effected accidentally, but will require to be manually operated by placing the finger and thumb in contact with the side of the pin B and the end A of the coil,

- the result being to effectually avoid accidental detachment of the pin under all circumstances.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a pin substantially as described, a guard consisting of a spiral coil of flexible material and of substantially uniform radius throughout, said coil being arranged with its axis substantially in line with the pin, and with the end of the pin projecting beyond the coil.

2. A safety-pin, comprising a single flexible wire, pointed at one end, coiled near the middle, and terminating in a spiral coil, of substantially uniform radius throughout and adapted to engage and surround the said pointed end, said coil being arranged With its axis substantially in line with the pin, and 10 with the end of the pin projecting beyond the coil.
