Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUCIA J. FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Devils Lake, in the countyv of Ramsey, State of North Dakota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Fasteners; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners for loves and similar articles and more particuarly to those embodying the principle of resilience, and has for its object to provide a fastener which may be easily and quickly operated, which will be unlikely to be accidentally disengaged, and which will be so constructed as to be manufactured at a low figure.
Another object is to provide means in combination with a fastener for drawing the portions to be fastened together.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure shown and described in the application except as required by the scope of the a pended. claims, as various modifications wil be apparent to one skilled in the art.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view showing the clasp in top plan with the button engaged therein, portions connected with the clasp and button being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing the clasp in top plan, ortions thereof being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a view showing the under side of the clasp-carrying portion of the glove and illusthe manner of attaching the clasp. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a section through thebutton and the flexible member. Fig. 6 is a view showing a portion of a glove provided with the present fastener, the latter being in operative position. Fig. 7 is an edge view of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises two members, a button, and a button-receiving clasp. The former comprises a head 9 carried by a shank 10 which extends upwardly and concentrica ally from a metallic disk 11 having a plurality of sharpened peripheral fingers 12 right angles thereto and oppositely from the shank 10. These fingers are forced through a fabric or piece of leather to which the button is to be attached, and a disk 13 is disposed within the inclosure of the fingers at the opposite side of the material from the disk 1 1, and the fingers are bent over against the second disk to hold the parts in position.
The clasp is formed from a single piece of wire of a resilient nature, which is bent at one end to form a loop 15, beyond which it extends straight as shown at 17, to a loop 16 formed in the wire in spaced relation to the loop 15, the wire being crossed to form this loop 16, and extending at an angle away from the portion 17 as at 18, at the end of which portion the wire is curved outwardly, then toward the loop 16 and across the portion 18 to form a loop 19 lying in spaced relation to the,
loop 16. Beyond the loop 19, the wire is turned to extend away from the portion 17 thereof, as shown at A, and beyond this portion A it is bent into an elongated loop 21 extending longitudinally of the portion 17 of the wire, this loop also extending inwardly over the loop 19, and a loop 23 to be presently described. -At the termination of the loop 21, the wire is bent to extend parallel andv in en agement with the portion A, as shown at and beyond this portion B it is bent to engage the loop 15 and then curved away from this loop to form the terminal loop 23. The resilience of the wire, as will be readily understood, will permit movement of the loop 15 away from the loop 23, and there is thus formed a throat C between these loops for the passage of the shank 10 of the button therethrough into a central socket 24, surrounded by the portions 17 and 18 of the wire, a part of the loop 23 and the portion A of the wire adjacent the loop 19. It will thus be seen that when the stem is passed through the throat into the socket, the head 9 will extend over the portions surrounding the socket to prevent passage of the head through the socket.
As shown in Fig. 3, the portions of the clasp with the exception of the 100 21 are disposed against the under surface 0 the fabric, the edge portion D of the fabric being tu 11d under to cover portions of the loops 19 and 23, and the fabric extends between the loop 21 and the remaining portions of the clasp, so that the loop 21 extends inwardly over the fabric from the free edge thereof. A
formed integral therewith and extending at flexible member 25 is secured to the material E to which the button is fastened at a point at the opposite side of the button from the free edge of this material, and when the button is to be engaged in the clasp, the flexible member may be engaged around the loop 21 and drawn upwardly over the inner edge thereof as shown in Fig. 2 to bring the two portions of the material E and E together for engagement of the buttons shank 10 through the throat C. The clasp is secured in position by sewing over the loops 15, 16 and 19 as shown at Z, X and Y respectively.
What is claimed is 1. In a fastener, the combination with a button, of a clasp having a socket and a throat communicating with the socket for the passage of the button therethrough into the socket, the portions at the sides of the throat being constructed to lie yieldably in mutual engagement, said clasp having a loop arranged to lie at the opposite side of a piece of material from the portion in which the socket and throat are formed, said 100 being connected between its ends with the socket.
2. The combination with an article having portions adapted for attachment to each other, of a button carried by one of the portions, a clasp secured to the other portion and including parts lying at opposite sides of said portion, one of said parts being constructed and arranged to receive and hold the button, and a flexible member secured to the button-carrying portion and adapted for engagement around the other part of the clasp and for movement with respect thereto to bring the button-carrying portion into position for engagement of the button in the clasp.
