SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 624,966, dated May 16, 1899.

Be it known that I, VALERIA PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleburne, county of Riley, State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, of which t-he following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fasteners for cloaks and other garments, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device which may be readily attached to the meeting edges of a garment and when so attached will permit of the securement of said edges without the necessity of forming buttonholes in the garment or attaching buttons thereto.

Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying'drawings, forming a part'of this specification, in which- Figure l is a section showing my improvement applied to the meeting edges of a garment when the latter are secured together thereby; Fig. 2, a plan view of the two sections of the device secured in place upon the meetingedges of a garment, but separated from each other; and Fig. 3, a perspective of the same.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide two disks A and B, which have formed therewith tangs C and D, respectively, of such shape and size-as to be passed through the fabric of the garment and clenched upon the under side thereof, thereby securing the disks to the garment without the necessity of stitching. y

A staple or housing is secured to the disk A, so as to project slightly above the upper surface of the disk, and a spring latch-tongue F is formed with or secured to the disk B and projecting over the same terminates in an underturned hook G, as clearly shown, and by means of which the two lsections of the device are secured together.

bring these meeting edges together and overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. l, to permit the spring-tongue Fto pass over the staple or housing until the hooked end thereof is beyond the outer edge of said staple-,when it will spring downward into alinement with the space beneath the staple, so that thereafter any outward movement of the tongue will engage its hook with the staple, as clearly shown in Fig. l,.and when this has been accomplished itis obvious that the meeting edges of the garment will be securely held in their proper relative positions.

To unfasten the garment, it is only necessary to force the sections of the device inward sufficiently to cause the hook G to pass the staple and then spring said tongue upward, so as to carry the hook out of alinement with the space beneath the staple, when the meeting edges of the garment may be separated.

If found desirable in practice, a cut-away Y portion I-I may be formed in the disk A, so as to embrace the base of the spring-tongue, and by so doing relieve the outer end of the tongue from undue strain incident to a tendency in the meeting edges of the garment to move up and down, as will be readily understood.`

In the modification shown in Fig. 5l I provide for the sewing on of the disks insteadv of clenchin g them by tangs, and for this purpose small holes. I are formed in these tongues through which the thread is passed in the process of sewing. The cost of manufacturing a fastener of this description is exceedingly small, since the entire work may be done by automatic machinery, thereby obviating eX- pensive hand operations and yet producing the device in a more accurate manner than would otherwise be the case.

The outer surfaces of the fastener may be ornamented to suit the fancy of the manufacturer or user, thereby giving to the gar ment a more neat and attractive appearance than would be the case were buttons and buttonholes used. t

It is obvious that myimprovement may be used as a glove or shoe fastener as well as a garment-fastener, and I therefore do not Wish to be limited to this application.

Having thus fully'desoribed my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In combination two disks, one of -which is cut away at its edge and provided with a housing, the opposite disk having a latch-tongue extending over the first-named disk` and its housing and provided with an underturned extremity adapted to enter the housing While a portion of the body of the latch-tongue lies in the cut-away portion, substantially as de- 1o scribed.
