Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. MUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Fastenings, ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in garment clasps. One of its objects is to pro vide a clasp particularly adapted to unite the meeting edges of skirt plackets, wrappers, shirt waists, etc., which will hold the meeting edges of the garment in the desired position.

Another object is to provide such an article in which the members can be easily and conveniently united and disengaged when de sired, and which are prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged.

Another object is to provide a clasp for the purpose mentioned adapted in form so that the clasp members may be serially secured to tapes in the process of manufacture, and the tapes stitched or otherwise secured to the garment.

Another object is to provide such an article, which is capable of attachment to tapes, or to be secured directly to the garment as desired.

Another object is to provide an article having the desired characteristics, and which is also capable of being quickly, conveniently accurately and economically manufactured.

It further consists in certain details of form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which;

In the accompanying drawings A represents the female clasp member, which in the preferred form is provided with a tubular projection or eyelet a by which it may be firmly and readily attached to a tape B, or if desired directly to the garment. The face or base a of member A is preferably of triangular outline and sufficient area to retain the member in line with the face of the garment to which it is attached, thus assisting in coupling the members and holding the meeting edges of the garment in line with and overlapping each other, producing the desired neat appearance.

O represents the male clasp member, which preferably as shown comprises a piece of material bent upon itself to form a shoe or base 0 of sufficient area to retain the member C in line with the face of a garment, a tubular projection or eyelet c which serves to firmly attach it to the tape B or to the garment directly, and a hook or tongue 0 overhanging the shoe 0 and preferably having converging edges c to correspond with the converging channel (L The shoe or base 0 and the tongue or hook c are joined by a free, terminal, preferably curved section or neck 0 This free terminal neck serves as a feeler by which the user, by sense of touch, may therewith feel about until the narrow neck has entered into the wider portion of the space between the con- This may be accomplished with great facility since the narrow neck 0 is free of the fabric so that it may be manipulated with great freedom until the proper entrance is found, which may be accomplished with much more facility and ease by reason of this free terminal neck. A hemispherical projection c on the tongue frictionally engages the face of member A during the act of engaging and disengaging the clasp members, and serves together with the resilience of the other engaging parts of the respective members to prevent the clasp becoming accidentally disengaged without exerting sufficient pressure to prevent the members being readily disengaged when desired. When the members are fully engaged the projection c enters the recess a formed by the eyelet (1, thereby serving to lock the two clasp members together, with the converging edges of the tongue in loose contact with the converging channel a which prevents any but slight pivotal movement of the clasp members relative to each other, and holds the garment in the desired position.

The connection of the tongue and the shoe at the forward narrow end of the male member of the device by a neck which constitutes a free terminal feeler not only insures the tongue entering into engagement with the female member of the device even should the free end of the tongue become accidentally bent down in contact with the shoe, but, as before explained, facilitates, by the sense of touch of feeling, the engagement of the two members of the attaching clasp.

In the modification illustrated in Figs. 7, 8-, 9, and 14, the clasp members A C in place of being secured to the tape or garment by eyelets, are provided respectively with projections or prongs a and c, which are stamped integral with the members A C and bent at right angles thereto, so as to be forced through and clenched upon the opposite side of the tape or garment. In the mo dification Fig. 7 the member A is provided with a seat a to register with and receive the projection c of the tongue. In the modification Fig. 14 a projection a from the face of member A engages the rear end of the tongue 0 to lock the tongue in place.

In the modification shown in Figs. 10 to 13 the respective members A C are pierced with eyes a c by means of which the members may be sewed to the tape or garment.

In the modification Figs. 15, and 16 the inturned ribs a are lifted and formed from a portion of the tubular projection or eyelet (L10 of the member A a member such as shown in Fig. 4 being employed therewith. This modification may be attached to the tape as shown in Figs. 17 and 18, and also so as to stand at right angles to that shown in Figs. 17 and 18, while the other modifica tions are usually set as shown in Figs. 17 and 18.

In the process of manufacture I preferably attach the clasp members respectively at regular intervals to strong tapes B, B. In applying the clasps to the garment, sections of the tapes of the desired length are sewed, preferably by machine to the meeting edges of the garment by lines of stitches b, 5.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In an article of the character indicated a member having means for attaching its base to the garment, and upwardly and inwardly turned ribs; a member bent upon itself to constitute a shoe having means for attaching it to the garment and a tongue overhanging said shoe and connected thereto by a neck, said tongue being adapted to engage beneath the inturned ribs of said first named member, and means for frictionally locking the members against accidental disengagement.

2. In an article of the character indicated, a member comprising a base having a tubular projection upon one side to attach said base to a garment, and converging ways projecting up from the opposite side of said base; and a second engaging member bent upon itself to constitute a shoe and a tongue united by a narrow neck adapted to pass between the converging ways of said first member, the base of said second member having a tubular projection to attach said member to a garment.

3. In an article of the character indicated, a member having means for attaching its base to a garment, said member being provided with converging ways; a member com prising a shoe having means for attaching to the garment, an overhanging tongue having converging edges to engage with the converging ways of said first named member and a narrow, free, terminal neck connecting said tongue and shoe, and being of a width to pass between said ways and to guide the tongue into engagement therewith.
