To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JAMES LANE POALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jenkintown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to hooks and eyes and in such connection ithas particular relation to the construction and arrangement of the hook member of such devices.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a garment fastener' of the hook and eye type in which the hook member is constructed and arranged so as to be readily attached to the garment, requiring a minimum amount of skill and labor to locate and secure the same in proper position.

A further object of my Ainvention is to provide a hook member having such conformation as to enable the hoolr and eye to be rendered invisible in use if desired.

My invention also contemplates certain details of construction as will later appear.

The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which :-d

In the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings the hook member is punched and pressed from sheet metal but it should be understood that the same may if desired be made from wire bent to the proper conformation so as to embody the functional requirements of the structure.

ln the hoolr member shown in Figs. l to 3 of the drawings, 6 is a sewing loop arranged at the forward end of the hook member and 7 is the engaging bill which is adapted to cooperate in use with any of the usual forms of eye member such as are used in these devices. The engaging bill 7 extends rearwardly from the sewing loop 6, being connected therewith by the upward extension 8 which may be either vertical or inclined as desired. The engaging bill 7 lies in a plane substantially parallel with and some distance above the plane of the sewing loop 6. A tongue or prong 9 also extends rearwardly from the sewing loop 6 in a plane which is substantially parallel to but below the plane of said sewing loop 6, the tongue 9 being connected to the sewing loop 6 by means of an extension l0 which may also be either vertical or inclined. The tongue or prong 9 is preferably provided with a pointed end 11 so as to enable the tongue 9 to readily penetrate between the surfaces of the garment as will hereinafter be more fully explained. There also extends rearwardly from the sewing loop 6 on each side of the engaging bill 7 a hump member 12 which extends from said sewing loop a slight distance in the same plane and thereafter being bent upwardly in proximity to the engaging bill 7 then being bent downwardly and continuing in substantially the same plane as that of the sewing loop 6, and if desired the forward ends of the hump members 12 may be joined together by the bridging portion 13.

The modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4L and 5 is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. l to 3 with the exception that it is provided with two penetrating tongues or prongs 9 one on each side of the engaging bill 7 and with but one hump member which is centrally disposed between the two side portions of said engaging bill.

lt will be seen that both forms of the hook member which are shown in the drawings may be readily punched and formed from sheet metal with very little waste of material in the manufacture of the same.

In the use of the device the tongue or prong 9 is caused to penetrate the garment at the point where the hook is to be located and the hook member is pushed rearwardly to its position whereupon the sewing loop 6 may be then sewed fast to permanently locate the hook member on the garment. It should be noted that the rear end of the hump member l2 lying in approximately the same plane as the sewing loop 6 will assist in guiding the penetrating tongue 9 to its proper position between the surfaces of the garment and that the function of the penetrating prong is to prevent the turning about of the hook member when the strain comes on the same in use, it being understood that the sole fastening means consists of the sewing loop 6 which is at the forward end of the hook member and not at the rear end thereof as in most forms of hook and eye as at present in use. It will, of Course, be nnderstood that the material from which the hook member is made should have sutlieient resiliency to permit the eye member to readily pass the contiguous portions of the hump member and the engaging bill 7.

Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A hook member of a hook and eye fastener comprising a sewing loop at the forward end thereof, an engaging bill extending rearwardly from said sewing loop in a plane above the same, a penetrating prong extending rearwardly from said sewing loop in a plane below the same and a hump member extending rearwardly from Said sewing loop and having a portion thereo-tl contiguous to Said engaging bill.

2. A hook member of a hook and eye fastener comprising a sewing loop at the Jforward end thereof, an engaging bill extending rearwardly from said sewing loop in a plane above the Same and substantially parallel thereto, a penetrating prong extending rearwardly from said sewing loop in a plane below the Same and Substantially parallel thereto, and a hump member extending rearwardly from said Sewing loop having a portion thereof Contiguous to said engaging bill and terminating in the same plane as the Sewing loop.

3. A hook member of a hook and eye fastener comprising an engaging bill, a Shank adapted to penetrate the garment, a hump member, and a Sewing loo-p, all extending from a common point, the engaging bill, shank, and hump member extending in one general direction, and the sewing loop extending in a direction opposite thereto.
