WEARING-APPAREL FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES B. CONDE and CHARLES C. MosooNY, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in fearing-Apparel Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification.

The invention relates. to apparel, and has for an object to provide a fastener therefor.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device preferably adapted for use on skirt bands and the like, to: take the place of the usual hooks and eyes and by the use of which device the ends of the skirt band can be connected so that the skirt will be properly supported on the wearer and the ends prevented from accidental disengagement.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part ofthis specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the fastener, showing the two sections thereof disengaged, the dotted lines indicating the skirt band; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts of the fastener in .secured position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the fastener, namely, the socket member. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the socket member in Fig. 4 is formed Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 66 in Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the tongue member, forming one of the parts of the fastener; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the locking plate; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a modified form of tongue member; and Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a modified form of socket member.

Referring more particularly to the views, we disclose a skirt band 10, one of the ends 11 of which has sewed or otherwise secured thereto a socket member 12, whereas the other end of the skirt band has a tongue member 13 sewed or otherwise secured thereto. The socket member 12 preferably consists of a plate 14 which is preferablyformed of a blank and provided with a series of apertures 15, through which threads are adapted to be passed in securing the plate Specification of Letters Patent.

jto one of the ends 11 of the skirt band 10. j'The said plate is provided with a central opening 16, as shown in Fig. 5, and includes lrntegral ears 17 which areadapted to be bent upon the plate to form guide members 18, as shown in Figs. 1,, 2 and l, each of the ears 17 being provided with a notch 19 and which notches, when the ears are bent to form the guide members, provide an opening 20. The plate also has a front opening 21 adapted to register with the opening 20 and a forwardly projecting tongue 22 is formed with the plate 14 and/is preferably bentsli-ghtly to the rear, as shown in Fig. 4:. i A central longitudinal portion of the plate 14: is struck upwardly to provide a groove 23 in the underside of the plate and secured to the rear end of the plate is a locking member 2a, consisting of a spring like plate 25 having rigid connectionwith the rearendgof the plate 14: and normally lying in the groove23, the said spring-like 5 plate 25 having a locking head 26 in the na- 5 ture of a bead at its forward end and which fiis normally adapted to project through the openings 20 and. 21, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, ;3 and 4. A knob 27 is carried on the central portion of the spring like plate 25: and is adapted to: proj ect through the opening 16 so that when the knob is pressed from the front it will move the locking head 26 5 out, of the openings 20- and 21. The tongue member 13 is preferably formed of a single piece of material to pro- 'vide a plate 28 having suitable apertures 29 therein, through which threads are adapted to be passed to sew the plate to the other end 11 of the skirt band and the forward end of the plate terminates in a reduced member 30formed with an opening 31 and which is adapted to register with the openings 20 and 21 when the member 80 is arranged to liebetween the plate 1i and the guide members 18.

. Now when the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to connect the ends 11 of the waist band 10, the mem ber 30 is advanced toward the socket member 12 so that the said member 30 will lie between the guide members 18 and the plate 14:, the tongue 22 being formed to aid in moving the member 30 into position so that the opening 31 will register with the openings20 and 21. The locking head 26 is arranged so that when the member 30 is moved into the position mentioned, it will press the locking member out of the openings 20 and 21, due to the spring-like action of the plate 25, and, when the opening 31 registers with the openings 20 and 21, it will be apparent that through the medium of the spring-like plate 25 the locking head 26 will spring back into normal position, thus passing through the openings 20, 21 and 31 thereby locking the member 30 to the socket member 12, while at the same time any lateral movement of the tongue member 13 upon which the member 30 is formed will be preventedin view of the fact that the said member 80 lies between the guide members 18. By simply pressing on the knob 27 the locking head 26 will be moved out of the openings 20, 21 and 31 so that the tongue member 13 can be readily disengaged from the socket member 12.

In Figs.'9 and 10 we show a modified construction of the socket and tongue members, and in this instance instead of having the plate 28 provided with the apertures 29 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, we form the plate with a series of pointed lugs 32 which, when bent laterally to the plate 28, can be passed through one end of the skirt band and then bent upon themselves to be rigidly secured thereto. Similarly, the socket member 12 disclosed in Fig. 10, instead of having the apertures 15 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is formed with integral lugs 38 and ,which are bent laterally'to the plate 14 of the socket member and pass through the other end of the skirt band and bent upon themselves, it' being thus seen that the socket and tongue members as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 can be rigidly secured to the skirt band without necessitating any sewing.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the device described is of a simple construction, consists of few parts which cannot readily get out of order and can be cheaply manufactured.

Having thus described our invention, we claim:

In an apparel fastening device, the combination with a socket member for connection with one flap of the apparel and consisting of a plate having a longitudinally struck tapered portion forming a tapered recess in the rear of the plate, a spring-like locking member carried on the under side of the plate, said locking member being tapered to conform to the recess in the plate, a locking head on the tapered end of the locking member and projecting through an opening in the plate, oppositely bent ears on the plate, each provided with a semi-cireular cut away portion forming an opening registering with the opening in the plate and through which the locking member normally projects, a button projecting through an opening in the plate and connected to the locking member for moving the locking portion thereof out of the opening in the plate, and a tongue member for connection with the other flap of the apparel and provided with an opening adapted to register with the, opening in the plate of the socket memher when the tongue member is engaged therewith so that a portion of the locking member which passes through the opening in the plate will pass through the opening in the tongue member to lock the members together.
