To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT WV. COLLINS, a citizen of Canada, residing at Grand Forks, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in I-Iat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device for fastening hats to the head of the wearer which obviates the necessity of employing the usual hat pins, the invention being adapted for use with all kinds and designs of hats and adapted to present a neat and effective appcarancc when in use.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a simple devise which can be placed upon the hat at the time of manufacture or when the hat is purchased and which contemplates a means for engagement with'the hair and with the hat whereby the hat will be held upon the head without the use of the usual hat pin which, when passed through a hat, in time tend to mutilate the same in that the hat when the usual hat pins are for a time used therewith will have its sides punctured or perforated and thus present an unsightlyjappearance, while at the same time it will greatly decrease the wearing quality of the hat.

The invention further contemplates a device which can be applied to all kinds and designs of hats and which can be either arranged upon the hat at the time of manufacturing the same or when the hat is purchased so that, particularly in the latter instance, the purchaser can designate what parts of the hat she desires the device arranged on.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a hat 10 consisting of a crown 11 and brim 12, the crown 11 adjacent the point of formation of the brim 12 therewith on one side of the crown having suitably secured thereto a plurality of eyelets 13, these eyelets being passed through the crown and pressed into the material thereof so as to provide opening to the interior of the crown. In the opposed relation to the eyelets a plurality of plates 11 are secured within the crown, said plates being formed to provide clasps or sockets 15 and pins 16, each consisting of a shank 17 terminating at one end in a knob or ornamental design 18 and at the other end in a pointed head 19, and adapted to be passed through the eyelets 13 and thence through the hair which lies within the crown so that the free ends or the ends of the pins having the heads 19 thereon can be moved into the clasps 15 on the plates 14, said clasps or sockets 1.5 being tubular and of a spring-like nature, similar to the clasp on a glove so that when the heads 19 are pressed into engagement with the clasps, and which are in the nature of sockets, both ends of the pins will be held securely on the crown 11, with the medial portion of the pins passing through the hair to secure the hat upon the headv of the wearer. With this construction, it will be apparent that only one end of the pins, namely, the ornamental or knob ends, will be exposed eXteriorly of the crown, the other ends of the pins being arranged within the clasps carried by the plate secured to the inner face of the crown.

Each of the eyelets 13 is diametrically opposite and in horizontal alinement with the central point of the corresponding plate 141- and the tubular sockets on each plate converge toward their eyelet so that the pin 16 which extends loosely through the eyelet may be moved into longitudinal alinement with anyone of the sockets to project its head 19 squarely into engagement therewith. It is important that the center lines of the sockets be in radial alinement with their eyelets 13 for otherwise the head 0f the pin would not squarely engage with all of the sockets and unless thus engaged it will be liable to become detached therefrom.

I preferably show two pins used in con nection with the hat, but it will be understood thatone, two or more pins can be employed if necessary.

In the modified form of the device, I providey eyelets 2O on one side of the crown 1l and in opposed relation thereto similar pairs of eyelets 21, with pins 22 adapted to pass through the eyelets 20 and 2l so that the medial portions of the pins will pass through` the hair and both ends of the pins will project eXteriorly of the crown, one end of each pin 22having a knob 23 with a somewhat ornamental design thereon, and the other end of each pin terminating in a head 24 similar to the head 19, but which head 24 projects eXteriorly of the crown and is adapted to receive a socket or knob 25 in the configuration of an ornamental design. As in the preferred form of my device, I preferably show two similar pins in connection with the hat, but it will be understood that either one, two or more pins can be used. With the latter construction both ends of the pins project eXteriorly of the crown and both ends have suitable ornamentall designs or knobs thereon so that the hat vwill present a neat and effective appearance when appliedto the head of the wearer.

Tith these constructions it will be apparent that the usual hat pins are dispensed with, thus preventing the formation of an unusual number of perforations in the crown of thel hat and which occurs when the usual not be repeatedly perforated and the crown weakened by such perforations.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In combination with a hat, a fastener'comprising a plate secured to the inner side of the crown of the hat and curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature thereof,

a plurality of horizontally Valined sockets` formed integrally on the inner side of said plate in spaced relation, an eyelet formed in the hat crown at a point diametrically opposite and in horizontal alinement with the central point of the plate, said sockets being elongated and tubular and converging toward the eyelet, a pin extending loosely through said eyelet and movable into longitudinal alinement with each of said sockets, and a head formed on one extremity of the pin and squarely engageable in each of said sockets.
