BUTTON-ATTACHING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GnonerA R. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma, Gratiot county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Attaching Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a description.

My invention has for its object the production of a fastening device for buttons, or the like, whereby the buttons may be readily attached and detached from a garment when desired for laundrying or any other purpose, thereby preserving the button, which might otherwise be discolored or injured by contact with water, etc.

A further object of my invention is to provide a fastening device by means of which the kind of buttons applied to a garment may be changed as desired, to suit the style of trimming effect where buttons are used for such purpose.

A further object of my invention is to provide such a fastening device which is simple and cheap in construction, quickly and easily applied to the button and to the garment, and one which is very effective in its operation.

In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated what I now consider the preferred and most expedient form of my construction, although I do not desire to be limited to the precise details of size and proportion as here shown, and in these drawings,

Referrin to the drawing, A is a disk, which may be formed of metal, bone, or any other material suitable for the purpose, which is provided with an opening A, thgpugh the center thereof, from which a slot a extends to the outer periphery of the disk A. A plurality of small apertures 12- is provided near the periphery of the disk,

by means of which it may be attached to the garment where desired by stitching, or otherwise.

The fastening member which engages the button to be secured and which coacts with the disk A, comprises a base B, from which rises a shank b, which may or may not be flattened upon one side thereof to provide a shank which shall be angular in cross section, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4c. This shank supports a head 5, which may be arranged in any form or style desired to present proper apertures through which the button to be attached thereto may be engaged. In this instance, I have shown four projections extending radially from the center of the shank, each of which is provided with an opening through the end thereof, 6 which will adapt it to register with the openings through the buttons to be attached.

The button C is secured to the head 6, and the device is then ready for use. The disk is attached to the fabric of the garment D by sewing, or otherwise, and the shank b is passed through the slot a until it rests within the aperture A, with the base B between the disk and the fabric D, where it is maintained in position with the button ready for service in the same manner that it would be if secured directly to the garment. The fabric D of the garment is provided with a suitable button hole which takes over the button C and securely holds the two parts of the garment together. After the shank of the button fastener has been passed through the slot a into the central opening A, it may be turned so that the wider side thereof extends across the slotted opening to prevent its ready withdrawal therefrom.

As will be observed by reference to Fig. 2. the base B is preferably made elliptical in shape, the shank 5 also preferably conformed to the same shape for greater convenience in sliding through the opening a in the disk. While I have shown a top or head 5 provided with projections having openings 5 therethrough, I do not desire to be limited to that particular form of head, as it is obvious the head may be so constructed that it will adjust itself to different shaped buttons, such for instance, as those with a flat top, or others with a concavo-convex surface, any of which styles can be attached to the top of the shank and held in proper position for attachment to the garment as previously described.

I claim:

In a button fastener, the combination of a disk having an opening through the center thereof and a slot extending from said opening to the periphery .of the disk, said disk aforesaid slot to the central opening, a head supported by said shank, said head having.
