Description

Patented Deo. 23, 191.3.
SH01 nut UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE:
MARTHA V. GLOECKNIER, OF CHAUTAUQUA, NEW YORK.
BUTTON.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MARTHA V. GLoEoK- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chautauqua, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a speciication.
An object of the invention is to provide a button for removable attachment to garments and the like.
My invention embodies among other features a button preferably provided with a covering of the same material which is used in forming the garment to which the button is to be attached, the mentioned button being adapted for removable connection with the garment.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a body having a groove in the upper side thereof and provided with transversely eX- tending openings and a wire, extended through the said openings with the medial portion of the wire lying in the mentioned groove, one end of the wire being bent to form a hook and the other end of the wire being bent to form a spring actuated pin having the free end thereof for removable engagement with the hook to attach the body to a garment, the said body being preferably covered with cloth or other material and the spring of the said pin and the said hook being bent to form stop members to rigidly retain the said wire in engagement with the body.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment, showing my device at tached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my button, the covering thereof having been removed. Fig, 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a button body 10 having `a flat side 1l and an outer concave side 12, a groove 13 being provided in the concave side 12 and openings 14, 15 being provided to eX- tend transversely to the body l0.
A piece of wire 16 is bent to extend through the o enings 14, 15 with the medial portion 1 of the wire mounted to repose in the groove 13. The end of the wire Specification of Letters Patent.

which has been passed through the opening 14 is now bentto form a spring 18 which abuts against the flat side 11 of the body 10, the free end of the said spring being formed into an attaching pin 19. The end of the wire 16, which has been passed through the opening l5, is bent to form a hook 20, the inner end of the said hook being adapted to abut against the flat side 11 of the body 10 and thus it will be seen that the spring 18 and the hook 20, abutting against the flat side 11 of the body 10 will retain the wire 16 in rigid engagement with the body 10 and prevent any movement of the wire relatively to the body.
A suitable material 21 is provided to cover the concave side 12 of the body 10 with the edges of the piece of material passed around the edge of the body to engage the fiat side 11, where the edges of the material are secured in any convenient manner and when it is desired to attach my device to a garment, the pin 19 is first disengaged from the hook 20 and then passed through the material of the garment, after which the free end of the pin is rengaged with the hook 20, thus releasably retaining the button in position on the garment.
The covering for the button is preferably made of a material similar in color to the material of the garment and for the purpose of reducing the weight of the butto-n and also permitting a number of buttons to be strung together, I have provided a transversely extending opening 22, through which a suitable cord can be passed for the purpose of Stringing together a large number of buttons when the same are not to be used.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is z- As a new article of manufacture, a button consisting of an integral button shaped body and an integral spring-like attaching member for the body, the said attaching member consisting of a single piece of material bent at one end to provide a hook and then bent to extend transversely through the said body, after which the medial por tion of the said piece of material is arranged in a groove in the curved face of the body, with the said piece of material then bent to pass transversely through the body to the rear face thereof, after which the piece of material is coiled to provide a spring and then terminates in a pin having the free end thereof for engagement with the said hook,
the said button shaped body being adapted In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature to have the curved face thereof covered With n presence of two Witnesses. material which will inolose the medial port- L MARTHA V. GLOECKNER.
lon of the attaching member lying 1n the 5 groove of the curved face of the said body Witnesses:
and the said hook and the said coil abutting ELLEN E. POWERS,
against the under face of the Said body. GRACE H. LOMBARD.
