Description

E. L. SMITH. IATTACHABLE EAR FOR DOLLS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13. 191s.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
ELLA LOUISE SMITH, OF ROANOKE, ALABAMA.
ATTACHABLE EAR FOR DOLLS.
Application led September 13, 1918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA LOUISE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachable Ears for Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachable ears for dolls,.and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
The present invention is designed to be an improvement over that disclosed in my prior Patent N o. 800,333. In said prior patent I disclosed a doll having a head composed partly of fabric. The ear of the doll, in the prior patent, was sewed to the head. The work of sewing the ear required considerable time and the present invention is designed to provide an attachable ear which may be quickly and accurately secured in place, and which will remain in place permanently.
A further object of my invention is to provide an ear which is made of plastic material which can be readily attached to any doll head having fabric as a part of its composition, or a stuffing of material such as cotton.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My :invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of a doll with the ear attached in position; y
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view showing the ear in position to be applied; and
Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view showing a modified form of the device.
In carrying out my invention I make a molded ear 1 of any suitable plastic composition, such as plaster of Paris. The ear is provided with two openings, or perforations 2. The securing means consists of a staple l3 Whose prongs are provided with barbs 4.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a section of a dolls head which consists of a fabric or composition shell or exterior 5 with an interior stuffing of cotton 6.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 253,864.
In applying the ear the barbed prongs of the staple are' passed through the openings and pushed through the exterior shell into the stuffinor on the interior. The prongs of the staple are preferablv provided with a number of barbs so that each barb engages a portlon of the stuffing, or the interior wall of the shell, thereby holding the ear securely into. position. The work of attaching the ear 1s very slight, it only being necessary to place the ear in the proper position and to push the staple inwardly, thereby obviating the necessity of sewing all around the ear, as in the prior patent. Itmay sometimes happen, however, that 1t 1s inconvenient to get a staple of this character, and in such case, especially where the head is made of flexible fabric, as for instance with rag dolls, the ear may be sewed by passing thread 7 through the openings 2 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. This, however, is a much more simple procedure than to sew all around the ear.
In either case the ear is secured permanently to the head and, as stated before, in the case of the staple, it may be done almost instantly.
I claim:
l. The combination of a dolls head, an attachable ear therefor consisting of molded plastic material, said ear having a pair of openings, and a staple arranged to pass through the openings and into the head for securing the ear to the head.
2. The combination of a dolls head, an attachable ear therefor made of unyielding material and provided with a pair of openings, and a barbed staple arranged to pass through the openings and into the head and to engage portions of the head thereby firmly securing the ear to the head.
3. The combination of a dolls head, an attachable ear therefor made of unyielding material and provided with a pair of openings, and a staple provided with a plurality of barbs on each prong arranged to pass through the openings and into the head, the different barbs engaging different portions of the head whereby the ear is firmly secured to the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ELLA LOUISE SMITH.
