To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. SANDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident'of Webb City, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Pin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in safety pins, the object being'to provide a safety-pin formed of a single length of wire and so constructed that the pin member will be prevented from accidental displacement from its keeper or guard.
I will describe a safety-pin embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a safety-pin embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The safety-pin is formed of a single length of spring-metal wire, which is bent substantially midway of its length forming the back member 5, the turned end 6, and the pin member 7, which is pointed, so as to readily enterafabric. The end 6 is provided at about its center with an inwardly-turned eye 8, and the opposite end of the back or body member is curved'to form the double-loop members 9 10, which provide a guard or keeper for the pin-point. The end of the wire is coiled around the back, as at 11, and then it is flattened and extended across the loop, as at 12,
thus forming a flexible shield and guide for the pin passing into the loop. This flexible shield guides the pin into the loop or keeper from either side, so that it is convenient for either a left or right hand operator, and the pin always opens on the side it enters, which materially lessens the chances of the individual getting scratched.
As before stated, the improved pin is formed of a single length of spring-metal wire, an eye 8 being formed midway of the end 6, turned inwardly between the back and. pin members, thereby forming a fulcrum from which the pin receives the necessary spring, and the eye by being turned inward and practically within the plane of the back and pin members prevents any possibility of its entanglement with the fabric engaged by the pin. 55
