HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, 1, IVILLIAM WVINKL- MANN, and, 2, EDWARD MILLER, 1, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and, 2, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hat pin point protectors, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive protecting device that is made of a single piece of material bent and shaped whereby it can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a hat pin, to prevent the hat pin from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to a hat, also to prevent pedestrians and others from being injured when contacting with the pin.
A further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable hat pin point protecting device that is susceptible to any desired ornamentation and can be finished to harmonize with the pin in connection with which it is used.
\Ve attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the protecting device as applied to a hat pin. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan of a blank from which the protecting device is made.
A hat pin point protecting device in accordance with this invention is made of a flat piece of resilient material 1 that is oblong in plan and has the sides thereof curved inwardly, as at 2 and the ends of the piece of material rounded or terminating in heads 3 and at, that are apertured or provided with openings 5 and 6 respectively.
The piece of material 1 is bent upon itself to provide a short arm designated 7 and a long arm designated 8.
The head at of the long arm 8 is provided with a longitudinal oflset portion or depression 9 that extends from the opening Specification of Letters Patent.

6 to a point in proximity to the extreme end of the long arm, the offset portion or depression 9 of the long arm forming a groove or passage way whereby the pointed end 10 of a pin 11 can easily enter the open ing 6.
The outer side of the short arm 7 at the head 3 thereof has a similar offset or depressed portion 12, and by pressing the short arm 7 toward the long arm 8, the openings 6 and 5 aline to receive the pointed end of the pin. The pointed end of the pin is housed or retained between the arms 7 and 8 and it is a resiliency of these arms, especially the arm 7 relatively to the arm 8 that binds the protecting device upon the pointed end of the pin and prevents the same from becoming accidentally displaced.
From the foregoing it will be observed that we have devised an extremely simple, durable and inexpensive protecting device that can be used in connection with various kinds of pins, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, we would have it understood that the construction disclosed is susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is A hat pin point protecting device consisting of a body bent upon itself to provide a pair of resilient arms tending to spring in opposite directions with respect to each other, each of said arms in proximity to its free end formed with an opening and further provided in its outer face with a longitudinally extending depressed portion extending from the upper edge of an opening to a point in proximity to the free terminus of the arm, one of said arms being of greater length than the other, that arm of greater length projecting over the free terminus of the arm of shorter length whereby said depressed portion will be positioned in alinement to facilitate the passage of a pin through said openings.
