To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST G. BRUT- scnnm'a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ahatpin point protector, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a guard and lock that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a pin and clamped thereon, whereby the guard cannot become accidentally displaced.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hatpin point protector-that is susceptible to any desiredv ornamentation and which? will lock a hatpin in a hat, besides preventing pedestrians from being injured by contacting with the pin.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in'the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hatpin provided with a guard in accordance with this invention, Fig. ,2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the guard, as mounted upon the pointed end of a pin, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a portion of a detached guard, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same.
A guard in accordance with this invention colnprises a sleeve 1 adapted to receive the pointed end 2 of a hatpin. The sleeve 1 has one end thereof provided with an ornamental head 3 and the opposite end of the sleeve has diametrically opposed walls thereof slitted, as at 4 approximately two-thirds the length of the sleeve, the slits of said sleeve providing resilient semi-cylindrical arms 5 and 6 of greater thickness at one end thereof than at the opposite end, the increased thickness of the arms increasing the gripping power of the same relatively to the pointed end of a pin. The end of the arm 6 is provided with a funnel-shaped mouthpiece or entrance member 7 that acts as a guide in centering the pointed end of the pin 2 to enter the sleeve 1. Prior to mounting the head 3 upon the end of the sleeve 1, a barrel-shaped member 8 is slidably mounted upon the sleeve and with the member in proximity to the funnel-shaped mouthpiece 7, the resilient arms 5 and 6 are compressed and clamped upon the pointed end 2 of the pin. IVith the member 8 in engagement with the head 3, the arms 5 and 6 are released and the pointed end of the pin can be easily withdrawn from the sleeve 1.
In manufacturingthe device two methods can be resorted to. First, that of providing the sleeve with a flared end to form the funnel-shaped mouthpiece 6, then transversely slitting the funnel-shaped mouthpiece, as at 9 and then longitudinally slitting the sleeve 1 as indicated at 4, thereby releasing a portion of the sleeve to form the resilient arm 5, while the remainder of the device provides the resilient arm 6. The other method is that of making the funnelshaped mouthpiece 7 of a separate piece of material from the sleeve 1 and then soldering or otherwise securing the funnel-shaped mouthpiece 7 to the end of the arm 6. Either of these methods is inexpensive and a durable device is provided that has the advantage of being extremely simple, positive in its action and not liable to injury by ordinary use.
It is obvious that the head 3 is susceptible to any desired ornamentation and can be finished to harmonize with the head of the pm.
