To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. IIAY, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useil ul Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, retiercnce being bad. therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to hatpin point protectors, and the objects of my invention are to provide a protector that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to prevent the exposed end of the pin from, jabbing or injuring persons in the vicinity of the same, and to furnish a proteeter with positive and reliable means for retaining the same upon the pin.

Further objects of my invention are to provide an ornamental pin point protector that will prevent a pin from being lost or becoming accidentally displaced relatively to a hat, and to provide a protector of the above type that is SiiIlPlO, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly elticient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specificall y described and then claimed, and reference will. now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts tln'oughout the several views, in which Figure 1. is a side elevation of a pin in ac can-dance with this invention, 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the protector, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the n' tector, and Fig. 41 is a horizontal Fig. 9.

From the foregoing it will be observed that my device constitutes a guard :tor the pointed end oi the pin as well as a lock, and I reserve the right to ornament the guard whereby it will harmonize with the head of the pin.

hat I claim is:-

1. A hatpin point protector comprising a shell, a head movably mounted in said shell, a push pin carried by said head and. normally protruding through the outer end ol. said shell, a sectional tapering gripping member connected to said head and having its opposite end slittcd to provide lingers projecting l'rom the shell and adapted to trictionally engage a hatpin, moans surrounding the push pin and connected to said head for normally maintaining said sectional member in engagement with the hatpin, and said shell provided with means for engaging the gripping member along the length of its taper.

2. In a hatpin point: protector, a shell, a head carried by the outer end o'l. said shell and having a central axial opening iliormcd therein, said shell having its wall indented lit) to provide an interior annular seat, a head movably mounted in said shell, a push pin carried by said head and projecting through said axial opening, a retractile spring sur rounding said pin and having its ends connected respectively to said heads, and a sec tional tapering member having one end connected to the movable head and having its free end slitted to form fingers adapted to engage a hatpin, said seat tending to retain the fingers and hatpin in holding engagement.
