UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Jonn JOHNSON, or BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.
SAFETY-,CATCH FOR BREASTPIN S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,054, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed Angust2,188l. Serial No. 245,916. (1% model.)
To all whom, it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOHN JOHNSON, of Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches for Breastpins, 820., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved catch for breastpins and similar articles; and it consists of a breastpiu provided with a safety catch composed of a fixed and slotted socket for the entrance of the pin-tongue, and a sliding and spring-actuated socket guided on the fixed socket, and suitable stops for confining the motion of the sliding socket within certain limits, so as to permit the removing and insertlng of the point of the pin-tongue in or irom the fixed socket when the sliding socket is moved back so as to clear the fixed socket, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel representsa breastpin with my improved safetycatch. -Fig. 2 representsa vertical longitudinal section through the safety-catch. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, partly in sectlon through the movable sleeve; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a'vertical and a horizontal section of a modified form of the safetycatch for breastpins.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base-plate of a breastpin or other article of ewelry, near one end of which is hinged the pin-tongue B by any approved hinge-connection, while a safety-catch, O, for the point of the pin-tongue is applied nearthe other end.
The safety-catch O is composed of a fixed socket, b, that is applied to a fixed post, a, of the base-plate A, said post and socket being recessed at one side for the insertion of the point of the pin-tongue B. The fixed socket bis of less diameter than the post a, and serves to guide a movable socket, cl, on the same, which socket is pressed by a spiral spring, 11, toward the collar or stop formed bythe post a,
The spiral spring d is located between the inwardly-extending flange d of the sliding socket d and the head 6 of a screw-plug,,e, that is inserted into the outer end of the fixed barrel or socket b, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; or the spring d is inserted into a separate socket, (2 attached to is provided with an exterior rim, (1*, for being conveniently taken hold of.
When it is desired to open the pin-tonguethat is to say, remove it from thefixed socket band post athe sliding-sleeve d is taken hold of and pushed back until it clears the slot of the fixed socket, so that-the point of the pin-tongue may be removed therefrom. For closing the breastpin, the socket is pushed back clear of the recess of the fixed barrel, so that the pin-tongue can be inserted, after which the sliding socket is moved over the fixed socket by the spring, so as ,to prevent the es cape of the pin-tongue from its catch.
Having thus described my invention,I claim 7 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In breastpinsand similar articles, the combination, with a base-plate, a pin-tongue hinged thereon, a fixed post, a fixed socket attached thereto, said socket and post being provided with a recess for inserting the point of the pin-tongue, a sliding socket guided on the fixed socket, a spring acting on the slidingvsocket and pressing the same over the fixed socket, and means, substantially as described, for stopping the sliding socket in either direction, so as to permit either the releasing or inserting of the point of the pin tongue, substantially as set forth.
2. In breastpins and similar articles, the combination, with a base-plate and hinged pintongue, of a fixed post, a fixed socket attached thereto, said post and socket having a recess for the point of the pin-tongue, a sliding and spring-actuated socket guided on the fixed socket, said socket having an inwardly-bent flange at one end, and a screw-stud having an enlarged head, inserted into the outer end of the fixed socket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signedmy name in presence of two subscribing witnesses I JOHN JOHNSON.
Witnesses:
W. G. CHAMBERS, LOUIS KRETZ.
