SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPEGIFI'CATION forming part of Letters iatent No. 401,908, dated April 23, 1889. v Application filed July 16, 1888. seria No. 280,142. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known-that I, GUsTAvUs A. SoHLEoH- TER,`a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Badges or Boutonieres; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyi-ngl drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to a badge or boutonire as it is sometimes called, which is secured to.the material by means of a shank extending through the latter. v`
The objects are to produce a separable badge which may .be easily fastened close against the material and in such a way that the opposite plates may be placed in any desired relation to each other and retained in that relation without anypossibility of thclir T e badge may be double, either plate being separately exposed or both yat the same time, if desired.
Figure l shows the two parts of the badge united and secured to the material, the tubular shank part being in section. Fig. 2 shows the two parts separated. Figs. 3 and 4 represent two designs of plates which may be used for the separate parts and united so that both designs will stand properly andl without danger of turning.
The one plate D has a shank, E, which is formed preferably of a light tube or somewhat springy material. The upper edge of this tubular shank is curled inwardly by means of a suitable tool driven down upon it while properly clamped, so as to form a slight bead, E', around the inside at the top of the shank. A slot, E2, which may be made either before or after the curling of the upper edge, as above described, extends longitudinally down the shank toward the plate D, and a pin, F, projects from the inner face of the latter to a somewhat less height than the shank. The other part consists of a plate, A, provided with a shank, B, which is slightly tapered at the outer end and formed with a reduced diameter, B', near its base, thus leaving itsomewhat ball-shaped. Apin, C, similar to F, projects inwardly from the plate D.
In attaching the badge to the lapel of a coat or other suitable place a small hole is made in the material and the shank E is pushed into it, care being taken to keep the top of the badge upward, as it cannot be turned after the pin F enters the material. The shank B of the opposite part is pushed into the tubular shank, the spring of the latter allowing it to open until the largest diameter of the shank B has passed the bead Ef and the two parts are closed tight against the material, the spring of the tubular shank tending to assist in closing the two parts together after the bead has passed the largest diameter of the shank B, and the shape of the latter permitting the two plates to get somewhat out of parallel, if necessary, to suit the material. The same care should be taken to keep the plate A with the top upward, if desired, as after the pin C enters the material it cannot be changed without withdrawing it.
Thus by simply pushing the two parts together they are as eectually prevented from shifting as if riveted, yet can be readily separated by a reasonably hard longitudinal pull.
What I claim as new and of my invention is as follows:
A button or badge consisting of two parts with engaging Shanks, substantially as described, each of said parts having a pin projecting from its inner face parallel with the shank, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS A. SCHLECI-ITER.
IVitnesses:
Il. J. SMITH, EDWARD YEAGER.
